picHistoric District Walking Tour

By foot or by car, Lynchburg’s seven historic districts are a must see. These prosperous neighborhoods sprang up in Lynchburg during the 19th Century when tobacco tycoons, doctors, and attorneys made Lynchburg the wealthiest city in the nation for its size. The impressive Queen Ann and Federal style mansions offer both an educational experience and unparalleled delight for the lovers of history. A self-guided walking tour brochure is available at the Lynchburg Visitor Information Center.

Historic Sandusky

Historic Sandusky, built in 1808, is one of the Lynchburg area's first homes to display the architectural details and refinements characteristic of Federal style mansions. Legends of duels fought for honor gave this remarkable Virginia landmark its name. Completed in 1815 by Dr. George Cabell, Sr., this Federal style mansion features carefully restored interiors that preserve the classical designs popularized in 19th century America by Owen Biddle and England's William Paine. Remarkable vivid colors and rich, stylish furnishings echo the builder's affection for...

HISTORY

PICThe Academy of Fine Arts was established through a merger between the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center and the Academy of Music in August 2003. The merger was the result of a plan to preserve the best goals and achievements of the two long-standing and respected arts organizations through the creation of a stronger financial and operating base for long-term support of the fine arts in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The 1905 Academy of Music Theatre, located in downtown Lynchburg, is one of Central Virginia's most notable historic treasures of the last century. Now the only remaining of six original Academy of Music Theatres in the Commonwealth, this edifice boasted perfect sightlines, extraordinary acoustics, and was Lynchburg's first fully electrified building. The theatre hosted landmark performances by artists who were vital to the evolution of the performing arts in America, such as George M. Cohan, Will Rodgers, Paderewski, and Ethel Barrymore, among many others.

Over the past 40 years, the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, formerly located on Thomson Drive, nurtured community talent in the disciplines of visual arts, dance and theater. We are proud to bring this rich tradition to the Academy of Fine Arts and look forward to a bright future.

With a plan to create a downtown fine arts center by 2010, the Academy of Fine Arts designed a complex that will include the restoration of the historic theatre and the renovation of two other historic buildings into an education center, art galleries, offices, lobbies, and open spaces. A flexible studio space for theatre productions, social events, and business meetings will complete the complex.

To be completed in two parts, Phase One (Arts Education Building and Studio Theatre) celebrated a grand opening in high style with a 2004 New Year's Eve gala and dedication. Classes are now being held in our Arts Education Center and performances can be seen regularly on the stage of our Joy and Lynch Christian Warehouse Theatre. And area businesses, community arts groups are taking full advantage of our new state of the art spaces for a host of meetings, performances and events.

Phase Two (Historic Theatre and public spaces) is now underway. The Cornerstone Campaign is seeking approximately $20 million to complete this work. It continues to approach local, regional and national supporters for their gifts. It also anticipates significant funding from historic and new market tax credits as the project moves forward. Upon completion, the Academy of Fine Arts will be key component to the successful revitalization of Lynchburg's historic downtown, bolstering its business environment, and enhancing the quality of life for Central Virginians.

In 1975, after retiring from Professional Baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Charley Sands decided to open a chain of restaurants called Charley's in various cities of Virginia and North Carolina. The first opening occurred in Charlottesville, VA. The Lynchburg Charley's was the second to open on September 24, 1980 at the River Ridge Mall.

The Lynchburg Charley's is now an independent restaurant owned and operated by Rob and MJ Pearson. Charley's moved to its new location on Graves Mill Road in 1996.

A new catering department was created in 2001 by Sarah Peters, our Catering Director and Head Chef, offering full service off -site catering for any events including business meetings, anniversaries, weddings and birthdays. The catering menus consist of Charley's favorites as well as creative new entrées.

Charley's has received honors such as the Lynchburg Regional Chamber's Small Business of the Year in 2004.

picCharleys Restaurant and Catering Company has consistently achieved Gold Star Ratings for our quality of product and service. The Gold Star Business List is Central Virginia's only objective list of high quality businesses, and membership doesn't come easy. First, they're each recommended by hundreds of people like you. Then they have to pass screening by independent researchers who look into their track records as businesses.
