This morning was the May Day Celebration at my son's school. It was just one of the best shows ever. We have a very small school. I think about 300 students, maybe more. I understand when moving one of the most important things is making sure there is a good school system, but you can't always judge a book by the first couple pages. Sometimes you have to delve into it some before it starts to get good ... like Stephen King ... always a great story but very difficult for me to get into for the first few chapters. Before I moved to Hawaii I heard HORROR stories about our schools. NONE true. I do not care that the "test scores" are below average ... I DO NOT CARE. With the no child left behind act they are pooling all the kids and all the test scores together ... it's just not fair to the schools or the teachers. We have children here from all over the world, we have an extemely diverse group of people who all make this their home. I believe it's my job to make sure my son is getting the education he deserves and I require. I am right on top of that and participate as a parent to help ensure he grows and learns as he should. My son is top in his class and has had a wonderful year in first grade. He is getting a top notch education provided by some of the most loving and caring people I have ever met. And, his education includes something he cannot get anywhere else ... Aloha.

Ka'u

Ka'u is said to be the landing site of the first Polynesian settlers. Covering over 80 miles of coast south of Kailua-Kona and due west of Hawai'i Volcano's National Park, Ka'u is Hawaii's largest district in terms of land area. Ka'u is filled with history one can see in the many petroglyphs from Miloli'i to Volcano. In the 1960's astronauts trained for lunar missions on the lava fields of Mauna Loa and in the 1860's Mark Twain spent time in Waiohinu, right here in Ka'u, and planted a Monkey Pod tree. (In 1957 the original tree was blown down and a new tree grew from it's sprouts that still stands today). Ka'u today is home to some of nature's most precious gifts. One can almost always see an endangered sea turtle at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach or one can find a real olivine Gem by taking a hike to Green Sands Beach off South Point. For those of us who know better, we have already found our green Gem ... called Ka'u.

Miloli'i

Miloli'i , located between mile markers 88 & 89, offers both approx.1/4 lots or 1 acre lots. Prices on vacant lots start around $45,000, homes starting around $195,000 for stunning ocean and mountain views. Whale watch, enjoy spinner dolphins, scuba/snorkel, fishing, boating, hiking to hidden beaches, exploring caves. All right here in Miloli'i. It's beautiful, peaceful, End every night with a sunset that lasts forever, see snow atop the mountain during season. Look at that mountain range. Na'alehu

There is a quaint public library, post office, local old fashioned theater house, many places of worship, the world famous Punalu'u bakery, The Hana Hou Restaurant, Naalehu elementary school, Na'alehu park where you can find one of the most filling lunches around, and so much more. Pahala

Colony One Condominiums at Sea Mountain Golf Course are between mile marker 56 & 57 and start around $205,000.The photo shown is the view these condo's offer. Just feet away from the ocean and the famous Black Sand Beach of Punalu'u and those rare sea turtles. If that's too far you can always enjoy the pool.

Wood Valley

Located beyond Pahala and located close to a well known Buddhist Temple that has been frequented by the Dalai Lama, Wood Valley grows some of the best coffee on earth. Volcano

For the most beautiful sunsets a 5 mile drive down to Miloli'i is the perfect way to end your day. There is a small park, a picnic area, camping, and a secret trail leading to a secret beach called Honomalino.

South Point:

You can actually touch it. The southern most point in the USA, that is. Vast sea cliffs, rolling surf, boating, fishing, hiking to Green Sand Beach, warm trade winds are all reasons to make a point of stopping at South Point.

Off to the East of the boat ramp down at South Point, there is a trail leading to the very rare, very beautiful Green Sand Beach. It is quite a hike, at about 2 1/2 miles each way, but well worth the effort. Who knows? You may find a real olivine gem... I did.

Waiohinu:
This is the place Mark Twain planted that famous Monkey Pod tree. Although the property, once called Mark Twain Square, is owned privately you can still feel the history when you stop to look at the tree grown from a sprout of the original destroyed in 1957.

The town of Na'alehu is the center of Ka'u. It is a growing area with golf course communities, the world famous Punalu'u Bakery, dining at the Shaka and the Han Hou, shopping, an uutdoor Market selling local fruits and veggies every Wednesday and Saturday, an old theater house and yet Na'alehu still maintains the old time charm of yesteryear that is Hawai'i.

Soft black sand beaches, sea turtles, golfcourse, incredible sunrises, fishing, camping, boating, surfing, BBQ, gift shop. That's all I have to say about that.

The Village of Pahala is an old time sugar cane village that offers local dining and shopping, beautiful mountain scenery and awesome shoreline views. Pahala has the only hospital for 50 miles. Stop in and enjoy a local dish at the Cafe.

A golf course community, a private fern village, a drive through volcano are all part of this desert rainforest. Tour the Volcano Winery or stop at the Lava Rock Cafe for a great meal before a breathtaking drive down the slopes of Kilauea to the lava flow. Hiking to the lava flow was one of the most exciting and difficult experiences of my life but worth every step I took. A MUST for all.
