THE LATEST ON CURTIS PARK VILLAGE

Many of us drive by the future Curtis Park Villageand wonder when we will have a new, wonderful neighborhood to boast about. If you are so inclined, you may want to attend a meeting at Stonepoint (the corner of Freeport Boulevard and Sutterville Road) to discover the newest developments.

The meeting will be from 6:30PM to 8PM on October 7th. The development team will discuss teh project with its recent activities and ask for input from the community on the latest issues.

This will be a great chance to learn first-hand the amount of work and expense Petrovich has dedicated to this project and what you can expect in the future!

CALIFORNIA STATE FAIR IN SACRAMENTO...A WINNER!

If you hadn't planned on going to the California State Fair in Sacramento...reconsider!

I went there today with my granddaughters and mother and had a great time! We pet llamas, wallabys (even the baby in the pouch), fawns, goats, pot bellied pigs, roosters, a donkey, and sheep. We looked at miniature horses and gihugic horses. We saw calves 1 day old and 10 piglets that put a whole new definiation to cute! We rode the ponies too!

But, that isn't what impressed me. Here's what impressed me:

  • A fair worker stopping to ask a motorist if she could help her (she was stopped in front of the gate).
  • A fair worker cleaning the outside of the garbage can to be sure it was clean.
  • Hand washing stations everywhere.
  • Drinking fountain stations everywhere.
  • Flowers..beautiful flowers and greenery in every corner.
  • The moved the little ones rides to the other side of the fair near the petting zoo, so the kiddies aren't forced to play with the big kids.

So, think again...this may be the best one yet!

DEVELOPERS VERSUS NEIGHBORHOODS...WHO SHOULD HAVE THE FINAL SAY?

It is always exciting when there is a new infill project in a city. Sacramento is no different. We have some remarkable infill projects going...one of them the largest in the United States.

The Railyards has it's own set of challenges. It is a downtown infill and must deal with parking, city codes, and other downtown businesses. I would not pretend to understand all of the dynamics of this massive undertaking.

The project that is nearer my heart is between Land Park and Curtis Park. Curtis Park Village is a much needed development that is decades in the making. Paul Petrovich purchased the property 5 years ago and has been investing in it ever since. I am sure he thought his biggest challenge would be the 80,000 cubic yards of toxic soil left by the Union Pacific Railroad. After cleaning this up, an additional approximately 320,000 cubic yards of toxic soil was discovered. Basing his cost on the citys first estimate, his costs went up substantially. To recover this cost ($4000 per day), he has increased the size of the commercial portion of this development.

Now his challenge is not the toxic cleanup, but the neighborhood's reaction to the increase in commercial space. There is an atmosphere of entitlement by many in the neighborhood to have Curtis Park Village done their way.

So, how much input should a neighborhood have? Should they be able to demand specific features in the developement?

SACRAMENTO...MORE THAN YOU KNOW AND MORE TO COME!

Sacramento is known for a few things...the midway point between Lake Tahoe and San Francisco...our tomatoes...Arnold Schwartzenneger...the Sacramento Kings.

Our best kept secrets...Music Circus...Railroad Museum...more trees per capita than anywhere else in the world (including Paris)...the Broadway Series...the Crocker Art Museum...a vibrant midtown with scores of superb restaurants...the Jazz Festival (musicians come from around the world).

And now...just wait! We have the Sacramento Railyards! This is the largest infill project to be accomplished in the United States! Check out what we will look like in the next 10 years..it is truly impressive!
