Meet ferry advisory reps

10-01-08
Paul Pival

Those of us depending on the Washington State Ferries for our livelihoods have been worried about our wallets ever since the passage of I-695 in 2000 cut funding. Unlike our brothers and sisters who drive free of charge on the highways east of Puget Sound, we pay a toll every time we go to work. You'll have a chance to meet with ferry reps to learn of the long-range plans that will take place, like it or not. Tomorrow (Thursday, Oct 2), Thursday, Oct. 2, 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Bainbridge Island Commons 402 Brien Drive, Bainbridge Island.

Mahler Eighth at Benaroya Hall

Paul Pival

I've posted before that Bainbridge Island and the Kitsap Peninsula are great places to live because of the easy access to Seattle's art venues, including the Seattle Art Museum, McCaw Hall, and Benaroya Hall. All you need do is take the 35-minute ferry to Seattle and walk (though most of us take the bus or cab to McCaw Hall). The ferry is on time 99% of the time (though last night the 5:30 sailing from Bainbridge was cancelled because M__k L__r___e forgot he had driven on and left his wheel-locked car behind: it turned out to be a good chance for a host of waiting passengers to get to know one another.

Don't miss Seattle Symphony's first-ever performance of Mahler's epic Eighth Symphony in Benaroya Hall! Featuring a host of vocals soloists, a gigantic chorus and an expanded orchestra, Mahler's "Symphony of A Thousand" is a monumental work of symphonic spectacle. Maestro Gerard Schwarz leads this exciting premiere on September 25, 27 & 28.

I have never sung with such a large chorus (220 singers, 8 soloists, including Seattle Opera Diva Jane Eaglen), a huge orchestra. This symphony has everything but the proverbial kitchen sink (hard to play one of those). Benaroya Hall had to build out the stage to hold all the performers.

If you email me, I'll send you my code for a 15% ticket discount. You probably will not have another chance to hear this rarely-performed (because of the necessary numbers) symphony in your lifetime. I'd love to see you, even if you'll find it hard to see me in the crowd onstage.

Suquamish next hot spot in Kitsap Count?

Paul Pival
I've had enough e-mails about Suquamish in the past weeks to post this note again. There has been rapid progress on a new community center and a boat dock. What used to be the remains (known locally as The Slab) of the attempted destruction of a community in the nineteenth century will soon be one of the jewels of Kitsap County. Suquamish, north of Bainbridge Island and east of Poulsbo, is a checkerboard community. Some of the land is owned by the Port Gamble Tribe, some by non-tribal residents. Homeowners in Suquamish Shores, on land leased from the tribe, know the land lease will expire. At that time, they will have to move their homes or lose them. These homeowners have known about the expiration date from the time they bought their homes. Now is the time for them to purchase non-tribal land to the north of their present location and begin making plans to move their homes. And if you're thinking of buying affordable land for the future, consider Suquamish. Land and home values are certain to increase here in the next 3-5 years. And don't be surprised if the new dock provides a fast ferry to Seattle.

New Director for Seattle Symphony?

Benaroya Hall

Pursuant to my post on the gala opening of the current symphony season Saturday night, the faint rumor on the street is that long-time director Gerard Schwarz is contemplating retirement, probably at the end of the '10-'11 season. I'll be interested to find out whether my sources are accurate . . .
