Why do mortgage companies take soooooo long to approve or deny a short sale?

It seems simple: get an offer accepted, send in all information the mortgage company requires, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, no call backs, no response to emails, wait, wait, wait, 5-6 months later acceptance, rejection, or counter, if you are lucky.

Why does it take longer than 30-45 days to have a yes or no?

I will never understand this process!
