Batman Begins explains how Bruce Wayne creates the persona of The Batman. The flick begins with Wayne in a Chinese jail, fighting the other inmates and beating them unconscious. The film is dedicated to deal with the actual mechanics of being Batman. As well as catching a glimpse of the military labs from where all his crime-fighting gear comes, as well as seeing his suit and his automobile and his arsenal as military hardware, we're even told how the invoicing is done, and why he's always got additional bits of Batsuit when he needs them. The biggest clarification of all, though, and the one that really grounds the film in 'reality', is just why a guy dressed up as a airborne rodent might not be such a harebrained idea. It's good, though, that the Jedi-like stuff where Bruce becomes skilled at his tricks is revealed early on. Montage of ninjas, and training out in the backwoods, and hard-won zen understanding usually comes in the middle of rights-of-passage movies, and it's always to a certain extent humorless, harsh and macho. Batman Begins is done with them in the first half hour, and when Alfred turns up to gather Master Bruce, a much better flick kicks off.
The movie does an very good job of reinventing the Batman character without making him cartoon-like or cheesy at all. This Batman is convincing and that's the reason I really liked it.
Although some of the situations might be straight out of the comics, Batman's driving force is captivating and attention-grabbing. Where the other Batman films were freak-shows this movie is all about doing what needs to be done to save those you hold dear. I liked this flick and can honestly say that this is a strong movie, quite likely the best this character has ever been done on the big screen.

Both the best and worst thing about Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is that you get precisely what you expect. This is generally a good thing, because I enjoyed the first flick quite a bit, and loved how one of its goals involved skewering racial stereotypes. Most movies dealing with discrimination and bigotry are forthright and humorless, and they've been that way since the start. It simply integrated the actuality of narrow-mindedness which comes naturally while living as a minority in America. The movie recognized this situation, and dealt with it comically. For Harold & Kumar 2, the goals are still the same, with, not surprisingly, the intention of being even more extreme-- more vulgar, more nudity, and, yes, more confrontations of stereotypes. For example, in one scene, Harold & Kumar after being unfairly sent to Guantanamo Bay, make an unlikely escape, and find themselves on the run through the Deep South, then come across a certain group of people who seem to form a crowd when the two get into an accident and make a mess. Because of their own racial biases, they get terrified and run off, but then it's revealed that the "mob" was just approaching to help. Although it's funny, you can see it coming.
I think that's the best thing about these Harold & Kumar movies. They make stereotyping look absurd. They're saying... If you don't realize America is a land of many diverse people, all with common objectives (the pursuit of happiness, love, general respect, and gratifications both immediate and long-term), then you are ridiculous as well. This flick wasn't the best out there, but I liked it. Check it out if you get a chance.

In a rare dark performance, Kevin Costner raises what might have been a normal crime movie with a twist involving his id into a superior human horror film. Where this movie succeeds is that you care about the film's sociopathic anti-hero, Earl Brooks. Mr. Brooks is a film that has two story lines. One of those storylines succeeds while the other is shaky. That weaker storyline belongs to Detective Atwood (Demi Moore), who offers an effective performance but whose character is never given the room to breathe.
Mr. Brooks seems like a simple cat and mouse movie between a killer and a detective but it actually has multiple layers, one involving Earl Brook's daughter, the second involving the witness to one of Brook's crimes and the third involving a criminal Detective Atwood sent to prison who has escaped. I was very surprised at some of the story ingredients included: a box maker, a millionaire and steroid abuser and how they were integrated into the plot and nine times out of ten they worked. I'd like to go in depth about them but that would spoil them for anyone who hasn't seen this film.
Let me not forget the wonderful performance by Earl Brook's id, Marshall (William Hurt). This is a part of Earl Brook's mind that has been given its own name, physical appearance and personality traits that Brook's identifies with, laughs with, plans with, a part of his brain. This is much like the situation with The Narrator's mind in Fight Club when it came to Tyler Durden except in Mr. Brooks, Earl is fully aware that Marshall is a figment of his imagination but is nevertheless a welcome part of him.
If you are a horror, crime or thriller lover Mr. Brooks is the film for you!
