A lesson from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Anyone remember the movie "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"? What a wonderful movie. I remember sitting back watching it on (giving away my age), one of the channels on the old black and white TV, Betamax, then Laserdisc, eventually VCR, and now on DVD. It was a classic my dad and us kids would watch only when the chores and homework was done, and only as a treat. It is a treat watching it with my 5 year old son Seth because he is inquisitive, and likes the cowboy aspect; but there is also some life lessons throughout the movie.

One of my favorite scenes, which many REALTORS / Real Estate Agents should watch, is when Duco (The Ugly), who is the career criminal, is in the bombed out town from the cannon fire. He makes his way into a hotel and finds a tub full of bathwater and decides to make himself at home. While he is in the tub, one of his previous adversaries enters into the room and thinks he has caught Duco off guard. Duco's adversary has his pistol drawn and pointed at Duco while giving a spiel of praise that he has caught Duco in such a weak and compromising position. Just when all things seems lost for Duco, gunfire errupts, not from Duco's adversary, but from Duco himself. Duco had his pistol in the tub with him, and trained on the guy the whole time, guess who lost? It was at that moment after Duco shot the man he said "If you're gonna shoot, shoot, don't talk."

Sound familiar? If your gonna submit an offer, type or write it up, and submit it, don't talk. It is irritating to have a conversation with an agent for about ten minutes or so, taking away precious time, answering questions, asking questions, the agent stating they will submit an offer, and in the end, nothing. I understand this whole business is about creating relationships but does the agent on the other end understand that as well? Kind of like the boy who cried wolf, I guess we'll leave that to ponder. Happy hunting.

The Story of the Boo Boo and the Moo Moo

Once upon a time we were "all" children with innocent minds and free from worry. Well that also depends on who you may ask, I know some people that claim they were never young; and some that have not grown up yet. As children we were told by our parents and guardians, or maybe this is just innate in us, that when something on us hurt it was a "Boo Boo". When my boys decide they do not want to listen I tell them they will go to Donkey Island, watch Pinocio if you do not know, and the "Moo Moo" will get them. What is a Moo Moo? It is a Filipino version of the Boogey Man, and something my wife was told as she grew up in the Philippines. Two very simple terms for us parents and guardians, and children to get a point across.

Now what does this all mean in this blog? How often have we in our profession over-looked simplicity, talked ourselves out of a deal, or try to impress our clients or prospective clients with "professional words and / or terms". KISS, Keep It Simple Sam, explain it to me as a five year old. Not that anyone wants to be treated as a child, however sometimes we as REALTORS and Agents place ourselves on this high pedestal and forget simplicity. Have you ever noticed anyone trying to impress others with BIG words, and yet they look like the animal Mary road into Bethlehem on? Come on we all have.

Remember, the next time you are having a conversation with anyone, think back to your childhood and keep it simple. Happy hunting.
