Home with lawn and shrubs

It's time to get your lawn and plants ready for the Spring and Summer months ahead.

Spring cleanups are important to allow for proper maintenance of shrubs and turf areas.

  • All twigs and leaves should be removed.
  • All shrubs should be trimmed low to allow new growth and the filling in of bare spots.
  • Turf areas should be properly treated with a pre-emergent to prevent weed seeds from germinating
  • Winter weeds that start to grow need to be sprayed once the temperature has reached 50°
We use a 10% pre-emergent mix with 13% nitrogen in the fertilizer to assist the grass in coming out of dormancy and thicken, but not be burned at the same time. We apply two applications of the pre-emergent with the first in mid-March and the second application in late April. Both applications prevent approximately 95% of broad leaf weeds and crabgrass.

Shrub Care - Both General and Winter

shrubs

The care of shrubs is very simple

  • unless they are planted in a space where they will outgrow the space and annual pruning becomes necessary
  • unless they are planted in a place with the wrong light. A plant in shade that needs light will always be the plant unlikely to thrive
  • if you surround them with 3 to 4 inches of organic mulch.
PRUNING - generally speaking
  • Flowering trees and shrubs should be pruned after blooming in the Spring
  • Roses should be pruned before new growth starts in the Spring to get rid of any damage caused by winter
  • Perennials can be pruned in Fall or Spring before new growth starts
  • Ornamental grasses can be cut back in the Fall or allowed to sit out the winter and then cut back in the Spring before new growth. appears.

Which Ice Melters Are Effective In Northern Virginia

Cold Man

Using ice melters to clear snow and ice from walkways is far more effective than chipping away at ice only to find with melting during the day it refreezes overnight and you have to start all over again the next day.

Ice melters reduce the temperature at which ice or snow freezes. It is turned into water or slush. The solid chemicals cut through the snow and form a brine which cuts through the bond that snow or ice form with the surface.

Frequently, people will lay down the ice melter before the bad weather strikes. This has the advantage of melting ice or snow before it freezes to the surface.

The two most popular ice melters are Rock Salt (sodium chloride) and Calcium Chloride.

  • ROCK SALT is the least expensive of the two. It will not melt ice or snow below 20 degrees Fahrenheit
  • CALCIUM CHLORIDE, on the other hand, is effective to -25 degrees Fahrenheit.

I am unaware of any evidence that either of them will harm concrete or plant life. However, like any chemical, they should only be used in accordance with the manufacturer's directions
