Oktoberfest Celebration in Germantown, WI

09-23-09
Pat Tasker

Oktoberfest celebrations will be held in various locations at this time of year. Germantown will of course have one of their own...it is called Germantown after all!

Oktoberfest started almost 2 centuries ago in Munich as an engagement celebration of King Ludwig. It was such a great party, it has continued year after year for the last 176 years. A good time is had by all who partake in the festivities which include eating, drinking, dancing and music. Traditional food includes sausages, kraut, pretzels, and of course very large mugs (ein mass) of beer.

Many cities continue this tradition by hosting celebrations. http://www.bastbellmuseum.com/oktoberfest_sponsors.html

This year, a new addition promises to be fun....Dachshund racing at 3pm on Saturday, Sept 26th. If you are hungry or thirsty, come on out and support the Germantown Historical Society!

9-11 Who are YOU Remembering today?

09-11-09
Pat Tasker

There have been many mentions and remembrances today of that horrible event 8 years ago. At our Wiscionsin Realtors Convention, we had a moment of silence. At our CRS luncheon there was a moment of slience.

I am sure most people were remembering those lost on that tragic day, lost in 3 different places, New York, Washington DC & Shanksville, PA.

I chose to remember and pray for those that were "left behind". Those that perished that day have found eternal peace, and those left behind have not. Many children were left mother or fatherless. Spouses were left single, some to raise children, some wives to raise a child that was to be born in the next few months. I thought of them

Also in my thoughts were those that survived, but barely..... I am sure they have not only physical scars, but huge emotional scars. Most likely those physical scars are barely visible, and while the emotional scars may be less visible, or invisible, they are there. They will always be there. The "what ifs", the "why me" or "why not me". Offhand I think of Greg & Lauren, who documented Laurens escape with her life in the gripping book "Love, Greg & Lauren". Lauren was walking into the Trade Center Lobby, when the first plane hit, and was blasted back out of the building through the shattering glass lobby. She hung onto life through months of medical care for burns she got that day. I wonder how they are doing.....

Those who live "farther away" from these events, don't remember daily, but we all remember today....what are you praying for today?

WORDLESS WEDNESDAY! FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL-German style

first day of school

You might not think there would be ethnic traditions that are tied to the first day of school, but the Germans have it covered! School: A Sweet Start....On the child's first ever day of school, tradition has it in Germany, that the mother would make a tute (two-tah) and fill it with treats for the child. It was meant to sweeten the bitter pill of the first day of school, when life begins in earnest! Like many things, this custom has become commercialized, with tutes being sold in stores ...some of them are huge and measure up to 3 or 4 feet tall, sometimes as big as the child!

This was the first year I made tutes, and I made them for my grandkids...filled them with candy, and cute school supplies and toys....The kids loved them! In years past, the only tradition we had was the photo on the first day of school...NO MATTER THE AGE...yes, they hated it in high school, but I still did it!

Do you have any family tradition on the first day of school? I'd love to hear about them...PTasker@shorewest.com
