Training for Triathlons.....While the swim is feared or dreaded by most, (and Wisconsin has seen 3 deaths in races this season) it is my favorite....Partly because I love water and swimming, partly because I really can't run, and my bike is slow.... this great photo was taken by one of our coaches Kelly Steinberg...Kelly is an amazing coach, amazing triathlete, and an amazing photographer!

In case you haven't noticed, Germantown has a new sweet spot: The Bake Shop in Germantown, WI. http://www.nardosbakeshoppe.com/ It is tucked around a corner in the strip mall just south of the Flower Source. (W 145 N11074 Pilgrim Road) I almost hate to write about it, because once the word gets out, my favorites might sell out before I get there!
It is worth the search....You will be treated to some of the freshest bakery, reminiscent of mom's kitchen. I know my mom always made the best Butterhorns, but The Bake Shop can take hers on! Other treats in the display case include the most amazing brown sugar topped muffins and mini muffins, cookies, and mini-pineapple upside down cakes. Artisan Breads are available, as well as donuts. For a recent clients closing, I thought I'd take my buyers some treats. Yhe Magic Cookie Bars and Turtle Brownies looked sooo good, they started eating them right at the closing! They oohed and aahed, and kept on eating.
It is so good, you might just have a seat in the comfy eating area, and pick a book off the shelf, relax and enjoy! While you are munching away, you can take a mini vacation as you read one of the travel books.....

Years ago, we tried finding the place, no luck...We drove all around off Beecher Street looking, and finally gave up. Barnacle Bud's in Milwaukee Wi http://www.barnacle-buds.com/ , is a place you may have heard of, but have you actually FOUND it, and had a meal or drink?
For my husbands birthday, I thought it would be the perfect place for a casual dinner on a hot summer night. So I googled Barnacle Bud's, wrote down the directions, and headed out. Since it was a surprise for the Birthday Boy, I just kept giving the directions, as he drove... Well, even with directions, we STILL couldn't find it! We took quite a few turn arounds, our grandson kept wondering "where the heck are we going?" (when I got home and looked at those directions, turned out I fogot to write one of the turns!) and FINALLY we found it...since you have to drive on a road that seems like a private road or an alley, through a warehouse district, I am sure my husband was thinking we would be meeting up with some characters out of The Soprano's! Then, there was the fence they said to park by, and Voila! Barnacle Buds...
Quite an interesting place. Located right on the KK River, with a dock filled with boats, waiting for their owners to get off of work. The outdoor eating area is actually larger than the inside seemed to be. Lots of picnic tables with umbrellas, a regular bar with stools under a covered area, and along the wooden wharf area, another long stretch with bar stool. That was great, just sitting there along the waters edge, relaxing with a beverage! While we were there a family finished eating, and launched their very nice (and large) boat, and another came along a little while later. A kayaker came paddling down the river, and stopped for some food.
The food was great, including the largest crabcake I've seen (and I love them). http://www.barnacle-buds.com/images/2009_Menu.pdf At Barnacle Bud's, they don't seem to take themselves very seriously, as you can tell from their website! According to their website "Barnacle Buds features great menu items for every taste. From our Famous Buffalo Wings and popular Crab Cakes; the Big Bud Burger and "Home Wrecker" Big Dog; to Shrimp Scampi, Blackened Catfish and BBQ Ribs; we're sure you will find something that you will want to enjoy over and over again!" Friends of mine have reported they have excellent Margaritas.
If you are planning on going, better take the directions from their website, I guarantee it will save you a lot of time, and maybe a few heated discussions trying to find the darn place!
