WESTHAMPTON BEACH has long been know for its gorgeous silver sandy beaches. One of the few commercial hotels on the beach is the Bath And Tennis Hotel. Built in the early 50's, it's interesting to note that the description of the silver sands still holds true today.
The Bath and Tennis Club was built in 1953 and opened for business on Decoration Day May 30, 1954. The announcement brochure read as follows: " Announcing the BATH AND TENNIS CLUB OF WESTHAMPTON BEACH, LI.
Designed and destined to be the show place of the fashionable Hamptons, this handsome and luxurious Bath and Tennis Club is being constructed on 500 feet of ocean frontage of clear, silver sand.
The club will include family and individual bath houses, colorful cabanas, a terrace for dining and dancing, cocktail bar and a unique sun deck with an elevation of 22 feet overlooking the ocean, professional tennis courts and for next season a swimming pool!"
By 1956 – the announcement to the general public read as follows: "Acclaimed during its two years in the fashionable Hamptons as the quintessence in accommodations for family and recreation and relaxation, the handsome Bath and Tennis Club will offer even more extensive and more luxurious facilities during the 1956 season.
Last season, there was completed a magnificent CLUB APARTMENT HOTEL for the use of the members and their families. This two story modern colonial structure is built on 225 feet of silver sand at least 40 feet above the high water mark and overlooks the beautiful new swimming pool, beach and ocean/
The apartments consist of a large living room, bedroom, bath and kitchenette, complete with all facilities for light cooking. The famous Dorothy Draper furnished and decorated the apartments and building. Each apartment is of individual style and design and has a private terrace with a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean................." The sea defines Westhampton New York. The wide stretch of white sand that runs along its southern border is the place where its people have been coming for hundreds of years to play, work, socialize, and be alone. The power and beauty of the ocean waves are life-sustaining forces, as is the sense of peaceful solitude that comes with being in such a primeval place, with the seagulls, the sea breezes, and September's monarch butterflies.

I recently attended an interesting lecture on "Invasive Species on Long Island" at the Hallockville Farm on the North Fork of Long Island. It was an extremely informative lecture as it alerted me to various plant species that are now on the "Do Not Sell List" in an attempt to control invasive species from taking over the natural and native plants in the area . Purple Loosestrife, shown here, is just one example of an invasive species. Also known as the "purple plague," it is an ornamental plant known for its purple-spiked flowers. Once limited to gardens in the Northeast, it now chokes wetlands across the country.
Long Island is one of many locations throughout the U.S. that has taken progressive steps towards improving the environment by reducing the spread of invasive plants. Invasive plants have damaged Long Island's unique woodlands by replacing native flora, and in turn, negatively impacting wildlife and natural ecosystem processes.
The "Do Not Sell List" consists of over 60 of the worst invasive plants! Species on the list are "very highly invasive" or "highly invasive" and it is now illegal to sell, transport, distribute, or propagate species on the "Do Not Sell List" in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
