Fire Ants & My Texas-Two-Step

Club Soda ?

Saturday was a beautiful sunny day and I decided to work out in the yard.

Yes, I did. I got into the Fire Ants.

Yes, they sting, bite and can make you do a litle Texas-Two Step.

If you are new to Texas this is what to look for. If you haven't met up with them, I can assure you that you will sooner or later.

Typically they will measure about 1/8 to ¼ inch in length and are reddish brown or black in color.
You see a number of mounds made up of loose soil.

They are aggressive and begin to swarm whendisturbed.

Their bodies look like ordinary ants in that they have three sections: head, thorax, abdomen; three pairs of legs; and elbowed antennae. Usually the head will be a lighter color and the abdomen will be much darker.

Fire ants, on the other hand, are very aggressive. When their nests or mounds are disturbed or perceived to be disturbed they will emerge with a vengeance, biting and stinging any and everything they touch.

Look for Mounds:

They can also be identified by the mound-shaped nests they build. The mounds are at least 12 inches in both diameter and height, although they can be as large as two feet high and two feet wide. The mounds are only a preview of what is living under the ground. Nests underneath the earth will contain galleries, tunnels and chambers that intertwine in depths of one to five feet or more.

NOW THIS IS WHAT SOMEONE TOLD ME TO DO:

1. Buy CLUB SODA

2. Pour it over and around the mound

This is suppose to be a natural way to kill fire ants. I don't know if it will work but come tomorrow morning I am headed to the grocery store to buy some CLUB SODA.

My trash became someone's treasure; how to make a few dollars

Some of you know that Ceil and I have been remodeling the kitchen. The oversized sink we took out was put in when our home was built back in the early 1960's.

It was still sitting in the garage so Ceil decided to put it on the bulletin board at our local Frank's Grocery at Startzville here at Canyon Lake and also Craig's list. Well, I'll be darn if we didn't sell the thing. We could have sold five of them. So the story goes, someone's trash is someone's treasure. The couple was tickled with the purchase.

May be time to clean out your garage and get busy making a few extra dollars.

Tips:

Building a homes with a lot of reclaimed materials sounds cool - if you can find the goods. Luckily, locating material for reuse in home remodeling or home builidng is not that difficult. What's hard is the time it takes to find the right materials for your home projects - be it building new, or simply adding on to an already standing home. There's a lot to choose from in relation to reclamied materials, so make an initial plan about the items you need and if your not picky you can find some nice items at a good price.

New Braunfels Texas Scooter Store on Fortune Magazine's #38, 'Top 100 Best Places to Work'

This is just one more reason to be a resident of Comal County. Lookie what has happened now.

Scooter Store on Fortune Magazine's ‘Top 100 Best Places to Work' List...New Braunfels largest employer is in the news again.

Scooter Store 2The largest private employer in Comal County has been named one of the best places to work in the country.

For the 2nd time in 3 years, the Scooter Store has made it to Fortune Magazine's Top 100 Best Places to Work in the United States. This is the 2nd time the Scooter Store has made the Top 100 Best Places to Work List. In 2007, they ranked at #58. This time, they are up 20 spots, to #38 on that list.

Scooter Store officials say a lot of credit goes to the City of New Braunfels and the New Braunfels Chamber for their efforts in the last year to work with the Scooter Store on their expansion plans.

I think you may remember when we blogged about this massive expansion. Nice company and Nice People to work for and all happens in New Braunfels, Texas. I'm sure you see them often with advertising on TV. Good for the country and the consumer.
