Tony Tours the Town - Dorton Park - Concord, North Carolina

A few weeks back I took my girls to see a movie at The Gem Theatre in Cannon Village in Kannapolis NC. On the way home, we passed this park and decided to stop in and enjoy the day.

James L. Dorton Park located off of Poplar Tent Road in Concord, North Carolina.

It was a beautiful day for sure. People were enjoying the park in many different ways.

Some were picnicing, some were tossing a frisbee. There were children kicking around a soccer ball while others were riding bikes.

Off in the distance there was a tag football game going on, and in the playground area, girls were flying high on the swingset.

My girls made a beeline for the playset. I guess being 8 and 11 years old doesn't mean you're too old to play on one of these...lol.

I sat on a bench watching my kids have a great time!

There was a party going on under one of the park's shelters. I was enjoying the music so much I went over to see if the DJ had a business card. He did and I told him I'd give him a call.

I called him a few days later and hired him to play at my daughter's communion party this coming May 30.

Check out his web site here.

We had a fun day! and really appreciate living in such a great area.

Come visit the Concord NC area...you just might want to stay!

Tony Tours the Town - Cannon Village - Kannapolis NC

My last post was about seeing a movie at the Gem Theatre in Kannapolis NC. The Gem is in an area known as Cannon Village.

The main shopping area of Cannon Village is a long street with businesses/shops on both sides. Here you will find furniture stores, gift shops, ice cream parlors, churches and much more.

After the movie, we took a leisurely walk down the pavered sidewalk to window shop and occassionally stop in a store.

Every so often, there is a bench to sit on should your footsies get tired. : )

There is even a public restroom should the need arise.

There is plenty of parking as well.

Located right next to Cannon Village is the new

NC Research Campus. It's being built where the old Textile buildings use to be.

At one time, Kannapolis was a booming textile town. But now, with that industry all but gone, the Research Campus has taken it's place. It is everyone's hope that the Campus will revitalize the area once more.

Research Campus under construction.

With the Research Campus, Cannon Village, and of course, the Gem Theatre, this area of Kannapolis is sure to be bustling in no time.

I have also noticed some new home construction in the area.

I'm happy to say, Kannapolis is a nice place to visit and a great place to live!

Tony Tours the Town - Gem Theatre - Kannapolis NC

Last weekend was so beautiful here in Concord, North Carolina that we decided to go to the movies...

go figure!

While there are many different theatres to choose from, we like to go to the Gem in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

Gem Theatre

One of the reasons I really like this theatre is because of the outside facade. It reminds me of theatres of old, with the lighted marquee and ticket booth out front. They show only 1 movie at a time.

Tickets are $3.00 for everyone always!! That's a deal!

Once inside, you come to the concession stand. All candies are $1.00...yes! $1.00!

The food is also fairly priced. We bought 2 popcorns, 3 sodas and 2 candies for under $11.00. I dare you to spend that little in a big chain theatre.

Another nice aspect of the Gem is you can sit 1st floor level or in the balcony. We always take the balcony.

The upstairs foyer is handsomely decorated with tables, chairs and display cases.

There are restrooms upstairs...a must know fact...lol

We saw, Monsters vs. Aliens.

Excellent movie and not just for kids. : )

A good time was had by all!

So, if you are in the Concord/Kannapolis NC area, check out the Gem!

Now playing, Hannah Montanna.

Enjoy!!

Tony Tours The Town - Nomads in the woods?? - Concord NC

NO, just Boy Scout Troop 38!

After my son's JROTC competition, we headed over to his troop's Spring Camporee at Camp Cabarrus in Concord NC.

BSA Camp Cabarrus

Most of the other scouts had been at the camp since the previous late afternoon. So, we had a whole day to catch up on. It didn't take long for my son to get into the swing of things. We arrived in time to help cook dinner. The theme of this camporee was primitive cooking.

The boys had food cooking in holes in the ground, chickens on spits rotating over a fire, cherry pie fixin's in a cantaloupe shell baking over a fire, etc.

I have to say, after watching the food being cooked, I was a little leery of how it was going to taste. My worries were put aside for the food was delicious!

Here's my son and fellow scouts enjoying spit-cooked chicken.

Afterward, we sat around the fire, talking, telling stories, and enjoying our surroundings.

I love nature.

Don't you?!

In mid April, the troop is going to the North Carolina Outer Banks to camp out on the beach and hike the surrounding land.

Maybe I'll go!
