What happens after that computer goes bad?

What to do with that broken down computer and electronic equipment? You can't just toss it away in the trash. And what about things like household chemicals, paints, or even motor oils? Throwing out any of these things that may contain toxic substances is a definite no no. Well if you're a resident of Passaic County NJ, you do have a way to dispose of these items safely.

Passaic County will be accepting items at the Para Transit Facility located at 1310 Route 23 north in Wayne on specific dates in 2009. Listed below are the items being accepted and the dates for those items.

Computers and Electronics

Computers contain heavy metals like lead and arsenic that can be harmful if released into the air through incineration or leaked from a landfill. Motherboards, monitors, laptops, printers, hard drives, fax machines, and other electronics will be accepted May 8th and 9th & Sept 25th and 26th.

Household Chemicals

Things such as old batteries, paint remover, solvents, oil based paint, motor oil, and insecticides can be dropped off April 25th and Oct 10th. And also June 6th at the West Milford Recycling Center at 30 Lycosky Drive.

These are important dates to remember. Please mark them in your calenders so that if you have any of these items, they can be disposed of properly. Do your part to help preserve our environment!

Do I really need to do a Radon Test?

Radon Gas is a subject that comes up with almost every Real Estate transaction in North Jersey. Many consumers are clueless however about what radon gas is, where it comes from, how it can affect you, and what it means to your Real Estate transaction.

Radon gas occurs naturally in the earth and can move through soil and rock entering buildings through cracks and openings. Once radon is inside a building, it will tend to remain indoors because most structures are designed to keep heated or cooled air from escaping. Also, lower air pressure inside buildings can create a vacuum, drawing radon into the home. Several factors can affect the concentration of radon in a home including: soil characteristics, building type, foundation condition, occupant lifestyle, and even weather.

Being exposed to high concentrations of radon over an extended period of time can pose a risk of lung cancer. The higher the level of radon, the higher the risk. The standard acceptable level of radon concentration in any dwelling is 4 pCi/L. Most Radon specialists will recommend a radon mitigation system be installed in any home with a level of 4 pCi/L or above. These systems are relatively easy to have installed, fairly inexpensive, and highly effective...removing radon gas from the living quarters and releasing it back outside into the atmosphere were it can dissipate naturally.

So when purchasing your new home, especially in North Jersey, make sure to have a radon test performed along with your home inspection. Radon is here folks, but being informed and knowing what to do about it can make a world of difference in your decision making and your future happiness.

We'll help you navigate your way through your Real Estate transaction...every step of the way!

The Greatest Game Ever

The 1958 NFL Championship Game was a classic.

50 years ago today - December 28, 1958 - the game that changed the face of the National Football League took place in New York at Yankee Stadium. The NY Giants and Baltimore Colts participated in what has become to be known as the greatest game in NFL history - a game that captured the nations attention and started America's fascination with Pro Football to help propel the league into the number one sports entity it is today.

The game featured many legendary NFL stars such as: Pat Summerall, Frank Gifford, Kyle Rote, Charlie Conerly, Sam Huff, and Andy Robustelli for the Giants and Johnny Unitas, Alan Ameche, Raymond Berry, Jim Parker, and Art Donovan for the Colts. The Colts had Weeb Ewbank (who would later lead the NY Jets to their only Super Bowl victory in 1969) as their Head Coach, while the Giants employed two Assistant coaches who would go on to become coaching legends - Tom Landry and Vince Lombardi.

But what made this game special was the fact that this was the first ever overtime game in NFL history. The excitement of the hard fought battle with so much at stake and the sudden death finish was something not previously experienced by football fans. Was it technically the best football game that was ever played? Most experts, including many of the participants, would say no. But in terms of importance to the growth and expansion of a league, the 1958 Colts / Giants Championship Game was indeed...The Greatest Game Ever.
