The Marrakesh Moroccan Restaurant in NW Portland

Marrakesh Restaurant in Portland

Would you like to ride on the Marrakesh express? It's taking me, and my mouth, to the corner of NW 21st and Northup.

On March 5 my son turned 25. And what better way to celebrate then to go to a local restaurant and enjoy a meal that I don't have to prepare, cook or clean up!!

A group of 10 of us headed on the Marrakesh express and we had a delightful meal and wonderful time.

The Marrakesh is Great for Groups

The seating is on hassocks and low, comfy sofas and the meal is brought in with courses. The tables are beautiful works of art themselves with handcrafted inlay mosaic designs.

The meal served at Marrakesh restaurant in Portland is presented family style and what a great way to gather with family and friends. Don't do what I did . . . fill up on the bread.

Wait and pace yourself, you're going to eat a lot at Marrakesh. You'll be glad you made room.

Five Wonderful Marrakesh Courses

We started off with a light Lentil soup, then a lovely salad of chopped greens lightly hinted with garlic. Then a pasty type dish made of Phyllo and jammed full of wonderfully seasoned meat.

Then the main courses . . . which included:

  • Tagine of Chicken Lemon and Olives - Braised chicken served with preserved lemon sauce and olives
  • Tagine of Chicken Honey and Prunes - Served with light honey sauce, almonds, prunes, and sesame seeds
  • Tagine of Lamb with Eggplant - Braised lamb in ginger, saffron &garlic sauce with fried eggplant
  • Couscous Marrakesh - Steamed semolina grains topped with lamb or chicken, and seven vegetables
  • Brochette Marrakesh - Grilled, marinated tenderloin of leg of lamb served with saffron rice
  • Breka Vegetarian - Stuffed phyllo dough with mousseline potato, chopped green onions, parsley and cilantro
  • Chicken Brochette --- Grilled, marinated boneless skinless chicken served with saffron rice

Dessert was delicious custard with almond, baklava and mint tea.

"A tajine, or tagine (Berber: tajin), is a Berber dish from North Africa, that is named after the special earthenware pot in which it is cooked." ~~ Wikipedia.com

The Dessert Tray a Local Beaverton Bakery Filled With Deliciousness

The Dessert Tray Beaverton Bakery

Let's start off with a mouth-watering photo shall we?

Nothing says DELICIOUS then The Dessert Tray and their delicious bakery products. I went in to The Dessert Tray around Valentine's Day last month and I was like a kid in a candy store . . . or like a kid a bakery! Some thing. I was really having a hard time deciding what to sink my teeth into because this is the type of bakery that EVERYTHING looks -- well, good enough to EAT!! The decadence of choice was the Carrot Cake and it was delicious!

The Dessert Tray in Beaverton

The Dessert Tray started in Beaverton in 1996 with one employee as a wholesale bakery. They opened their doors at their present location in Beaverton in 1999 with their unique open bakery so their customers could see that the "mix was in."

"Founded in 1996, The Dessert Tray started with a small wholesale line and one employee. As our wholesale business grew, so did our desire to serve desserts to our neighbors in Beaverton. We opened the doors of our retail space in 1999 with an open kitchen and an intimate dining area. Tucked in the curves of SW Broadway, we are still being discovered by new friends. One of our greatest joys is to welcome newcomers with the scent of freshly baked desserts; that rich aroma is temptation itself. We hope to brighten your day with a sweet treat and a smile!"

What Does the Dessert Tray Offer?

If you're thinking of a special day event, The Dessert Tray makes those wonderful, whimsical, fancy cakes with the smooth icing that you don't really want to cut into because it's so beautiful. But desire for deliciousness wins out every time, doesn't it?

Remember, I said I was going in around Valentine's Day, so The Dessert Tray had this beauty sitting on top of it's counter. LOVELY!

I remember reading a newspaper (remember them?) article way back when that announced The Dessert Tray's opening. I've been a fan every since.

When I'm in the mood for something sweet, I drop in.

The treats that this Beaverton bakery has to offer:

  • Cupcakes - made with the same stuff they make the cakes
  • Cookies - chocolate chip, shortbread, Snickerdoodles, fudge browines, peanut butter . . .
  • Fruit and nut bars
