In the beautiful Silver Lake area in Oconomowoc, there is a condominium/single home community that is trying to beat the recession odds. The architecture is reminiscent of a village in Tuscany with tile-like roofs, ironwork, carriage-style garage doors, "turrets," columns, grand ceilings, European-style appliances, and many other features.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Unfortunately, in this economy, offers fall through...first homes cannot find buyers, and no one wants a"bridge" loan. So our last model is still for sale. The other villas are waiting for a buyer to come in and select their interior choices. And the beautiful 600 ft. of lake frontage is barely used by the residents who are here.
Hurry up Mr. President and bring us out of this recession!
If you want to see our Model, we are open on Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.

Okay. My sister helps them with the layout of the quarterly newsletter. She and my aunt, Gloria Sprague, talked me into attending one of Don Wiemer's postcard presentations and I was hooked. The event was held at the hospital meeting room in Oconomowoc, I assume because it was bigger than the museum's room.
Okay. I'm guilty of being a member of the historical society but never visiting it.
So, if you're an Oconomowoc resident...do you know where the museum is? Have you been there?Well, now I can say I have. It's in the old Armory building by Roosevelt Park. You can't miss it, the Shufeldt Elk stands right in front of it.
I was shocked at the quality and quantity of exhibits there were. The newest ones deal with sports and competition in the area, from in-land sailing to the Olympics. Yes, I said Olympics. Oconomowoc was home to a few Olympic contenders.
The Museum is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm, unless it's a slow day- volunteers (they call them "docents" might close early.
And you can do family history there. They have a volunteer genealogist there, Marcy Skerpa, who is very knowledgeable about the families in the area, and the resources. But call her ahead of time, or she may not be in. 569-0740 or email oahs-m@sbcglobal.net
Membership is only $15 annually; and the museum is free.
Well, I've done my part in promotion. Now get out there and find it this summer!
Unless you're an avid boater, you probably don't know where Okauchee is. Having grown up there on "Ice House" bay, and watching my grandfather re-hab old cottages in the 1960-70's before the term "flipping" was coined, it's amazing how times have changed.
My family lived on Lindy Lane, East Lindy Lane and Oak Lane. I watched barns come down, and a "chicken coop" turned into a one-bedroom home. The village has grown immensely, but the spirit and community of the residents is still here.
So discover our little town...you'll love the ambiance. And if you need more excitement, hop on I94 and go east! My great, great grandmother, Minnie Mahnke below and their cottage on Nickels Point, Okauchee Lake.

They say that Spring has arrived but I saw (for a short time) snow on the ground on Saturday morning, March 21 (around 6:30 am, in case you didn't get up until 8:00 am!). Not unusual for Wisconsin. I remember a May snowstorm in 1990 that left a few inches. So I asked my friend, and local farmer, Jeff Becker what he thought about it. He counts the number of snows he has every year and then uses that information for the following year.
Jeff said there's always three snows on a robin's back, and he has seen robins in the area for at least two weeks. I had never heard that expression before, but then I'm a city gal - or lake country gal, if you don't believe Oconomowoc is a city. Three snows on a robin's back.
I'm taking that advice and not moving the summer furniture out at the Vespera at Porticello condominiums on Sunday. My luck, it would be covered in snow by the next showing.
Hurry summer!
