Chief Plenty Coups' bronze sculpture lies near the Chamber of Commerce and is located North or town, near the intersection of 3rd Street (Highway 78) and Broadway Ave (Highway 212).
The following is a quote from Linderman's biography of Plenty Coups which is also shown on the permanent plaque near the monument.
"The buffalo gone and freedom denied him, the Indian was visited by two equally hideous strangers, famine and tuberculosis. He could cope with neither. His pride broken he felt himself and outcast, a beggar in his own country. It was now that Plenty Coups became the real leader of his people."
The following is a statement that chief Plenty Coups made that reveals his greatness (it is also displayed on the permanent plaque):
"All my life I have tried to learn as the chickadee learns by listening, profiting by the mistakes of others, that I may help my people. I hear the white man say there will be no more war. But this cannot be true. There will be other wars. Men have not changed, and whenever they quarrel they will fight as they have always done.
We love our country because it is beautiful, because we were born here. Strangers will covet it and someday try to possess it as surely as the sun will come tomorrow. Then there must be war, unless we have grown to be cowards without love in our hearts for our native land. And whenever war comes between this country and another, your people will find my people pointing their guns with yours. "If ever the hands of my people hold the rope that keeps this country's flag high in the air, it will never come down while an Absarokee (Crow) warrior lives."
Crow country once ranged from Three Forks to the Black Hills, from the Musselshell to the Big Horn Mountains. Red Lodge was a place of worship, food and protection for the Crow people when it was theirs. Please respect it and love it. It is a very good place.

The following is an excerpt from an article that I loved reading and that I wanted to share online. It was written by Audrey Clark for the Local Rag.
Upon deeper reflection of what it really means to those of us who live here, I realized that it is the "culture" of Red Lodge that binds us and our hearts to this place. Webster's New World Collegiate Dictionary defines culture in many ways. When I came to the eighth listed definition, I found what I was looking for. "CULTURE: the ideas, customs, skills, and arts of a particular people or group in a particular period."

The culture of Red Lodge as defined above has meant many different things to many different people. To the Crow this area was a place to live and hunt. To the mountain man and miner it was a place where the extractive practices of trapping, gold mining, and coal mining were the accepted mores of the day. Then came the ranching, railroad, and homestead eras whose culture of settlement and taming of the land were the focus. Tourism was a latecomer in the overall scheme of things, though it did start way back in 1872 in nearby Yellowstone Park. Nowadays, preservation of our precious natural ecosystems is of the highest priority.
Which brings us to present-day Red Lodge. What are the exact ideas, customs, skills, and arts that define us today ? Some of these are easy to define; others not quite so. Why did any of us come here? For some it is a familial home, others came for business opportunities. Some came from busy crowded places to raise their families here; some came to live close to nature and all it has to offer. Some have retired here. Many have sacrificed a better paying job or a fancier house for the privilege of living here. What could such diverse groups have in common?
As I see it, this is the soul and culture of Red Lodge. I think that we could all agree that it is indeed a privilege to live here, and it is a privilege to visit here. Let's keep it that way.
Audrey Clark

* Explanation:
The key statistic that I calculated is the absorption rate, the time it would take to sell the current total inventory at the present rate of sales. For my calculations, I determined the present rate of sales based on data retrieved for 4 different periods (latest 12 months, 6 months, 3 months and one month sales). Most would only look at the last month's sales to get the present rate of sales, but by looking at the 4 chosen different periods, we get a better sense of the trend in recent sales and the trend in the absorption rate.
If you want to learn more about the absorption rate and its importance, please read Amber Noble-Garland's post entitled: Market Absorption 101 - A basic lesson in Real Estate .
Based on the total inventory as of December 31, 2008 and a rate of sales similar to the number of units sold in period indicated (last year, 6 months, quarter or month), it would take the indicated time (in years and months indicated under Absorption Rate column) to sell the total inventory. For example, based on the inventory as of December 31, 2008, and a rate of sales similar to the number of units sold in the last year (last 12 months), it would take 5 years and 5 months to deplete the total inventory. However, based on the rate of sales similar to the number of units sold in the last month, it would take 9 years and 3 months to deplete the total inventory. The absorption rate is higher if we look at the more recent data (latest 1 month compared to latest year) as a result of a slow down in sales.
I will provide these statistics (for Residential and for Vacant Land) on a monthly basis to help clients and future prospects get a better undertanding of the market in Red Lodge.
I also have the absorption rate statistics broken down by price range for Residential and by acreage for Vacant Land. Feel free to contact me if you are interested to get an estimate (based on the inventory and the latest trends) of how long it would take before all the current inventory of properties in a specific price range in Red Lodge is sold.

I ran queries on the Red Lodge MLS, tabulated the numbers in a spreadsheet and came up with my first statistics to post on AR. The following summarizes my results:
