Batali and Friends Open EATALY in Flatiron District of Manhattan

Ross Ellis

This past Tuesday, EATALY, the Italian food and wine destination and brainchild of celebrity chef Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich, Lidia Matticchio Bastianich and Eataly founder Oscar Farinetti opened at 200 Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street in the old Toy Building in Manhattan.

A multilevel extravaganza of Italian food and wine called EATALY, the complex occupies nearly 50,000 square feet of space where Italian food-lovers can enjoy seven boutique restaurants - including a fine-dining Italian steakhouse called Manzo, a Neapolitan pizzeria and a year-round rooftop beer garden and microbrewery, not to mention a cooking school where Batali and others will teach classes throughout the year. It also has retail sections for everything from Italian housewares to prosciutto di Parma, a wine shop, bakery and patisserie, plus a supermarket-sized Italian food and wine marketplace.

The cooking school (classes begin in October) will even include an in-house travel agency that will organize trips. And in a partnership with Rizzoli, there will be a culinary corner primarily dedicated to cookbooks focusing on Italian food and wine.

I can't wait to go there. Anything with Mario's name on it is a hit!! Make sure to visit EATALY and stay tuned for more!

The Big Apple's perennial home-buying season kicked into high gear this spring and residential firms are reporting that buyers have come back to Manhattan in droves to snatch up apartments - especially with the rock-bottom mortgage rates and tax incentives.

According to the Real Deal, although the reports showed housing prices were either flat or up modestly compared with last year, sales of co-ops and condos reached pre-recession heights.

According to Halstead Property's 2nd Quarter 2010 Market Report Manhattan apartment closings rose 81% compared to a year ago, reaching their highest level since the third quarter of 2008. The average sale price also continued to improve, climbing 9% from 2009's second quarter to $1,377,135. The median price, which measures the middle of the market, rose 6% over the past year to $842,779.

The second leading cause of child deaths are from drowning: Learn water safety now

Swimming is a fun activity for many children to celebrate their summer vacation.

The water can be so much fun, yet it can also be dangerous for young children. Even for kids who know how to swim, there have still been drownings.

According to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death among children ages 1 to 4 years old and children 10 to 14 years. Children 4 and under actually have the highest drowning death rate in the U.S. and the majority of child drownings occur in backyard pools & spas.

Just this week, former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham's 2-year-old son drowned in his parent's pool spa in Las Vegas and last week NYC sixth grader Nicole Suriel drowned on a class trip to Long Beach. Two-year-old Joseph Anthony Daignault died on June 29th after drowning in his family's swimming pool. Since the end of May, eight children died in pool drownings in Tennessee.

According to Dr. Mark Waltzman at the Children's Hospital in Boston, toddlers have a difficult time keeping their top-heavy bodies balanced when sitting up and they often have a hard time getting back up after they fall, and can drown in just one inch of water.
