M-W School Board narrows search for superintendent

11-13-09

Central Valley - The Monroe-Woodbury School District has received 10 applications for the post of schools superintendent, including one internal candidate. In order to trim the field of contenders, the school board asked Terrence Olivo, chief operating officer for Orange-Ulster BOCES, to review the candidates. Olivo, who retired as Monroe-Woodbury superintendent several years ago, forwarded four of the applicants for consideration. School Board President Dr. Michael DiGeronimo said these candidates will be asked to complete a final application by the end of November. A schedule for interviews will be established in December. The new superintendent will oversee a school system with 7,500 students and a $146.8 million budget. DiGeronimo said that the new schools chief does not necessarily have to be a superintendent in another district “but the individual has to be able to value and fit into our outstanding school community while providing the leadership to move our primary and secondary schools toward becoming high achieving centers of excellence that work for all children. “While the final selection of a superintendent belongs to the Board, we believe that there is a role for the community and the employees of the District in the search,” DiGeronimo added. “We believe that participation of the two groups will ensure a process that will give the district a superintendent who will be an outstanding leader.” The School Board would like to appoint the new superintendent by its February board meeting.
