Zieburtz suggested spreading the utility rate increase over five years, averaging 3 percent annually.
His plan initially would add about $2 a month to the average bill of town residents and nearly double that for those who live outside the community but are served by town utilities.
Small increases each year would be easier for households to handle than sporadic sizable jumps, Zieburtz said.
I think there should be a central water and sewer company. We get our water from West Columbia water, and sewer from Lexington Town. And we pay enough already!
The average monthly residential bill inside town is $66 for both services and $113 outside town, officials estimate.
