Yesterday a group of us joined together to install new planting beds and a new brick pation for our local ABC (A Better Chance) house.
A Better Chance is a national non profit organization that provides education opportunites that will prepare students of color to compete for college placement and go on to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.
In Glastonbury, CT., our ABC program has been operating for 34 years! As a board member I am so proud of the comittment to education, diversity, and investment in our young people. We refer to our students as scholars.
Our scholars come to Glastonbury often come to us from large cities in the Northeast. They live here at this house while attending our local high school, Glastonbury High School. We have Resident Directors and an Academic Director that live with the scholars. We currently have five young men in our program. They are bright, talented, funny and caring and I am so grateful to have them in my life.
A local landscaping company, B&B Landscaping, has developed and executed an impressive plan to improve the property around the house. Their talented team generously donated their time yesterday to plant new periennial beds and lay a new brick patio.
Members of our board, house Directors, and our scholars joined B&B to work together on this project.
It was a beautiful fall day to be outside. We all had fun, got better aquainted and gained a great sense of satisfaction for a job well done.

Our house was large (almost 6,000 sqft including a finished walkout suite) empty, and white! white, walls, and large white marble tiles in every room in the main level with very ornate lighting fixtures. Even though we had many showings with serious buyers for months. We only had comments like it's cold. It feels like a hotel lobby and ballroom. Rhonda, When my dad died last fall, I had to fly from Colorado to Connecticut to take care of his estate. I first contacted Rhonda Rawlins, owner of Glastonbury Home Staging, South Glastonbury, CT, when one of my listings was not showing as well as I knew that it could if it were staged. I am a big believer in staging and this house needed staging. My listing was a beautiful high-end home that was vacant. Buyers were just not connecting with the house. Because it was vacant they objected to the flooring, the lighting and commenting that it just left them feeling cold.
