Puako Residential Community in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii

Puako community in Lihue, KauaiThe fine community of Puako is located on the southwestern edge of Lihue, close to all the conveniences that offers yet sufficiently removed to have the feel of a private setting bordered by the 18-hole Puakea golf course, the Ha'upu Mountains, and the blue Pacific Ocean. Homesites were originally developed by Grove Farms as a master planned community. Homes are clustered around side streets and cul-de-sacs connecting to Halehaka Road which enters agricultural lands as soon as it exits Puako in the Western side. On the east side, the community borders Nuhou Road which begins at Puako and connects to Lihue's Kukui Grove Shopping Center only 1 mile away. Kakela Makai Oceanview is a beautiful residential community located on a hillside overlooking the Kauai Coffee plantation fields with the ocean beyond. Most lot sizes are just a little under 1/4 acre with 199 properties plus a swimming pool and clubhouse. This community features homes built since 2002 and a large number of vacant lots, many for sale.

The Kakela Makai community association documents can be found HERE. Key documents located therein include a sitemap of homes and lots, Bylaws, CCRs, and Design Review Requirements. Although providing a convenient reference, these documents are not "official" documents recorded with the state of Hawaii and thus are not the final authority. There is a mix of owner-occupied and long-term rentals. Short term rentals are not allowed.

This attractive community is located on the outskirts of Lihue, Kauai's center of commerce. It consists of 30 buildings in a 2-story, duplex-style arrangement and one stand-alone building. Each has a 2-car garage and a modest, easy-to-maintain, private rear yard. It's within walking distance of Kukui Grove Mall, Costco, Home Depot, and Kauai Community College. I moved here myself in 2009 to take advantage of the convenience of Lihue living. Homes range from 2 to 4 bedrooms, 2 to 3 baths, and 924 to 1,336 square feet of living area. In January 2010, maintenance fees for the larger units were approximately $310/month and less for the smaller units. Property taxes vary greatly depending on exemptions and a sampling suggests a 2009 range of $0 to $3,106 per year.

Free-Style Cruising the Hawaiian Islands

One can arrive on Kauai by air or by sea. If by sea, then you will be arriving from another of our Hawaiian islands via the Pride of America shown below. It docks at Nawiliwili harbor in Lihue, our center of commerce. Pride of America is an inter-island cruise only so one must arrive in Honolulu by air. The ship goes from Honolulu to Maui, to 2 ports on the Big Island, to our beloved Kauai, and then back to Honolulu. Details are available on the NCL website by clicking the image.
