ID at the Voting Booth

Now that everyone is registered to vote...you did register I hope. If not visit your states website today to see if you still have time to register before the upcoming election. In Tennessee you have to be registered at least thirty days prior to the election you want to vote in.

***If you registered to vote in person or you have voted in Tennessee before, you only have to present evidence of your signature or sign an Affidavit of Identity. Do not allow a misinformed poll worker to discourage nor prevent you from voting if you meet this standard.***

In Tennessee, if you are a newly registered voter and you registered by mail, you will need to comply with the state's identification requirement at the polls in order to exercise your right and responsibility to vote.

Present ANY of the following to a poll worker:

  • Current Voter Registration Card
  • Current Tennessee Driver's License
  • Photo Identification that includes the voter's name and signature
  • If the voter has NONE of the above items, they can still vote if they have one item from each column below:

Column A

  • Current valid photo ID of any kind without a signature
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Government check
  • Paycheck
  • Any other government document that shows the voter's NAME and ADDRESS

Column B

  • Show ANY document with the voter's NAME and SIGNATURE

OR

  • Sign an official Affidavit of Identity form provided at the polling place (does not require a notary)

New Jersey Amusement Parks

As some of you regular readers may know from previous posts, when I was a young child the entire family would load into the family station wagon and head to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida or we would head to the beaches of New England. While the journey to get there wasn't always the most fun, we always had a great time once we got there. One of my favorite places as a child was Cape May, New Jersey.

Cape May really seemed to have it all and be the perfect place for a family beach vacation. The beach was always clean and the water was always clear and cool. The entire family would help to tote the whole days worth of essentials onto the beach. There was always the cooler filled with all the makings for great sandwiches, fruit and cheese to snack on, and sodas. We would each have our special towel, usually one we had chosen at some souvenir shop. Then all the stuff to proect us from the sun, umbrella, sunscreen, and a hat for each of us. And you can't forget the sand toys! These were fun filled summer days.

When we weren't spending the day at the beach, we would often visit an amusement park. There were few things as fun as New Jersey amusement parks. One of the most fun was Morey's Piers and Beachfront Waterparks; they didn't have the six rollercoasters they do today but it was still a blast. Today Morey's Piers actually has three different amusement parks and two water parks to choose from! You can also take advantaged of their many weekly specials, including Magical Mondays and the Friday Splashtacular! These were always some of the most fun parts of the summer. I am sure that one day I will return to Cape May and discover all the fun things I remember all over again!

Irish Festival of Knoxville!

The First Annual Irish Festival will be held this upcoming Saturday July 26, 2008 from 10:00 AM until 10:00 PM at World's Fair Park in Knoxville. Click HERE for directions. Tickets for Adults are $10 and can be purchased at the gate; Children are FREE! The festival will be a celebration of the continuing contributions the Irish community has been making since the earliest days of European settlement in East Tennessee. The stated mission of the festival is:

The mission of the Irish Festival of Knoxville, Inc. is to educate the community of East Tennessee of the Irish heritage of this region, with educational ties to environmental practices as a zero-waste festival, while raising funds for designated worthy public service agencies and charities.

An exciting aspect of this festival will be its stated goal to be zero waste and carbon-neutral! The organizers are using the traditional practice of carbon offsetting through the purchase of clean energy such as wind, farm animal wastes, and landfill gases. The festival organizers go beyond this carbon offsetting by incorporating community education on lifestyle changes that can reduce carbon emissions.

The Irish community has a long history of supporting police officers and firefighters. This event will carry on that support as the proceeds will benefit five very worthy organizations:

Knoxville Firefighters Association

Fraternal Order Police Volunteer Lodge #2

Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad

Remote Area Medical Foundation

The Ulster Project - The Ulster Project International Website

There will be a Kids Zone with all the fun diversions you would expect, a moon walk, a fun slide, face painting, arts and crafts, and camel rides! As children are free what better way to spend an afternoon. There will also be a multitude of vendors exhibiting and selling traditional Irish crafts, and environmental organizations promoting "green living."
