Sunday morning, earlier than normal get up time, about 5000 people started the Marathon of the Palm Beaches. The least we could do is be there to hand them their water, Gatoraid and Gu, and make their time a little more interesting and fun.
And we did. Nina and Bill Washawanny had this project to be of service in both Las Vegas and West Palm Beach and bring awareness to raising money for the cure for cancer. We had a wacky tourist, a cowgirl, several Las Vegas dealers, sexy waitress and showgirl. It was an entertaining time to watch these very serious runners at mile 13 and again at mile 19 as they accept refreshments from the sexy waitress or the showgirl. You might say a few got out of their pace a bit. The wacky tourist was such a hoot too. All the runners were encouraged from the whole group. Many of us left tired and hoarse.
What a day. It was fun volunteering, being crazy, raising money for the Cure for Cancer and having a wild and wacky time in the wacky Las Vegas booth.

On January 19th, 2008, my sister, our grandparents and I went down to Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach to Race for the Cure. This is a fundraiser for the research of a cure for Breast Cancer. The Komen South Florida Affiliate was established in 1991, and since then has raised over two and a half million dollars annually. They host a day of jogging, walking, and more for all ages; Co Ed, Kids, tots, men, and woman. Although I must say that most teens wouldn't like getting up before ten to go and run, since we do this already in Gym, I felt proud to because breast cancer runs in my family. All of my family members had been strong fighters, but my Aunt Colleen just over a year ago didn't make it. Although she wasn't able to cure hers, I feel running that day helped all those other people's aunts, mothers, sisters, cousins, and so on.
We went in a Co Ed race around 8:30. When we got there it was packed with racers and sponsors helping out the cause. I was surprised at how many people were
there, but we grabbed our shirts, and headed toward the starting line. Once we were off, it didn't seem to take too long till we were finished. With a whole group of people surrounding you as you run/walk the three miles, it makes you feel somewhat empowering. When we finished I felt really good about what we'd done. I know that over ten thousand people were there doing the same thing I was, but just the four of us together being there makes a difference. I raced for the cure of thousands of families out there; hoping that it helps them just like it has helped mine.
