Wondering Where Your NC State Tax Refund Is?

Tax Time ClipartGosh, it was soooo comforting to see the Newspaper article in our local Hendersonville Newspaper (The Times-News) today regarding state income tax refunds. I've been checking for the last few weeks to see if our refund has made it into our local checking account -- alas NO!! But now I know there is hope and that they intend to refund the refunds! For other folks who are wondering where their refunds are you might find this of interest.

The gist of the article from Raleigh says the slowdown in issuing the refunds is due to a shortage in the Revenue Department as the state's budget folks try to adjust the NC budget books to cover them. They have to figure out how to balance the current budget by June 30th when the current spending year ends.

Under the current economic situation I would guess that many state budgets are taking in a lot less than they owe! Kinda like many of us "regular" folks are experiencing during this time.

I gather it generally takes about 4 weeks to receive a refund (under more "normal times"). This is one of the first times my husband and I have been able to claim a refund as we always had to do NC Estimated Taxes and send them money!! And WOW -- if we didn't get to them by deadline time what we owed they wouldn't hesitate to get your "butt!"

The deadline for the state to get you your refund is May 30th. If they don't make that deadline they will have to add interest on to your refund (I haven't checked what their interest is!)

The article gos on to say you can track your refund progress on the the states Website. Here's the link if you'd like to check it out: http://www.dor.state.nc.us/

Tradgedy In Binghamton, NY

Another tragic, senseless shooting of innocent folks just going about their lives in Binghamton, NY at the American Civic Association building. In this case I believe I heard there was a citizen test in progress. 13 people killed including the "shooter" a Vietnamese immigrant.

Apparently, this person didn't embark on his mission to make demands/concessions for beliefs or anything else, but, purely to kill as many people as he could before killing himself.

How sad that it appears to be a side effect/impact of a failing/problematic economy seems to bring out so many more of these senseless acts of terror and killing. It certainly seems to be happening more often.

Robin and I send our condolences to all the families who will now have to deal with the losses of family members and the citizens of Binghamton, NY.

There appears to be no defense against these types of assaults except to become an armed society -- and even if that were to happen there's no guarantee that would prevent such acts.

Sadly,

03/18/09: Robin's opinion of current Market Conditions in Hendersonville, Asheville, Brevard and Surrounding Local Area

Western NC and my service areas -- including Hendersonville, Asheville, Brevard and neighboring counties are located in a "destination region" for many relocating families and retirees. As the above statistics indicate our current strong "Buyers Market" continues with a lot of inventory for buyers to choose from as more sellers have put their properties on the market in anticipation of a Spring pickup. Most sellers are more realistically pricing their properties for the current market but the list to sell price continues to decline, but, these statistics encompass all 4 counties in the Western NC Regional MLS and I believe that ratio will show a difference when done by county. I believe most properties are properly priced, but, some sellers, depending on their circumstances, are more willing to accept a lesser sales price to close a deal.

Market conditions in many other parts of the country continue to affect our Market as many potential purchasers must sell their existing properties before they can purchase and are experiencing difficulties with this in their existing market areas. Any foreclosure or short sale is always sad and unfortunate for the parties involved. We are having our share, but, relatively few in comparison to some other parts of the country

Listening to the news/media reports one could feel that the whole country is in a housing free fall and we are doomed! A good thing to remember and relate the housing market to is the weather. It's local and while it is raining somewhere, somewhere else it is sunny. Hopefully the entire country will soon experience some sunshine!

We were hoping for a much stronger deal for the housing market from the Stimulation Package. That evidently is not how it ended up and is much smaller and isn't for ALL buyers but limited to first time home buyers, etc, etc.

Hendersonville and Western NC is a beautiful area that has a lot to offer and if you are considering a real estate purchase it could be worth your while to come take a look while inventory is so plentiful and interest rates for qualified buyers remains at all time lows. Our local community banks are very viable and have money to loan for qualified buyers -- if you would like information on these Banks let me know.

With current property prices, high inventory levels and low interest rates this is a great time to purchase property! If more buyer phone calls and internet enquiries are any indication we're hoping to see an upturn in the local market in the near future.

Please email or call if I can be of real estate service to you for info on our local market.

Our Buyers Market continues, but, we are starting to notice a pick up in requests for information and showings. A good sign for the Spring. With a very high inventory of properties available to choose from and low interest rates this is definately a great opportunity for qualified buyers to purchase property.

I hope you will find this info helpful and for further info on the area please visit my home site at: http://NC-Hendersonville.com Thanks, Robin

White Squirrel Festival In Brevard, NC

Brevard NC White Squirrel

This year will mark the 5th Annual White Squirrel Festival and this year's dates are Saturday and Sunday May 24th and the 25th in downtown Brevard, North Carolina. This year will feature the ever popular Squirrel Box Derby which is a go-cart race down Jailhouse hill in downtown Brevard. For the first time this year The Rotary Club of Brevard will sponsor a 5K/10K White Squirrel Race. The music lineup is impressive and over sixteen acts are scheduled for the two days -- ALL FREE. The White Squirrel Festival has been voted "Best Spring Music Festival in Western North Carolina" in a reader news poll by the Asheville Citizen Times. If you are in the area you might want to drop by. You can find up to date info at the Festival Website http://whitesquirrelfestival.com.

Now here's the story behind our areas white squirrels as I've been told and from what I can find out -- documented. Allegedly a Mr. H. H. Mull introduced the unique creatures into the Brevard area. He was supposed to have been given a pair by a Mr. Black of Madison, Florida. After a carnival truck had overturned near his home he spotted some of these white squirrels running about in his pecan grove. He captured a pair and gave them to his friend, Mr. Mull.

Mr. Mull's daughter had wanted to breed them but this wasn't working in captivity. In 1951 one of the squirrels escaped so Mr. Mull set the other one free as well. It didn't take long before different locations were noticing white squirrels. They are loved throughout the area and in 1986 the Brevard City Council voted unanimously to pass an ordinance protecting them. You might think these squirrels are albinos, but, they have normal dark eyes. They also interbreed with our more common greys and produce a mixed litter.

They have now migrated to Etowah and are being spotted more and more in the Hendersonville area. They are beautiful and the first time I saw one I thought it was small statuary in a front yard -- until it ran!
