South Gwinnett Boys Track Runs the tables

The Darlington Cup South Gwinnett's Championship Trophy

The weekend of April 18th and 19th will go down as one of the highlights of Coach David Mudd's years as South Gwinnett Boys Track and Field coach.

To date the 2009 South Gwinnett Boys Track team has taken home 4 trophies and more than 100 medals. 3 of those trophies were 1st place and one 2nd place.

It started with the Running with the Devils Relays in Loganville, GA and yesterday's spectacular finish at the Darlington Rome News Tribune Invitational provide South Gwinnett's most recent trophy acquisition.

The last event of the day was the Boys 4x400 Relay whcih pitted South Gwinnetts 2 teams against Martin Luther King High School. The race was interesting for the first 3 exchanges but took on a dramatice tone with the exchanges to the 4th man. Roodgery Rosemberg lead out for South Gwinnett followed by ML King's 4th man. Kevin Gary recieved the baton and the first place runners were already 50 meters ahead in the curve. Roodgey and MLK battled for first place while Kevin attempted to make up lost ground. It appeared as the neared the home stretch that it would be South Gwinnett 1st, ML King 2nd and South Gwinnett 3rd. As they came out of the final curve Kevin Gary was gaining on the first 2 runners and everyone in the stands was on their feet cheering and yelling and screaming, with 5 meters to the finish Kevin had overtaken ML King's runner and finished in 2nd place behind his team mate RoodgeryRosemberg. Kevin Gary ran a 49.12 split and made one of the most incredible come backs in track for South Gwinnett.

Darlington's coach told Coach Mudd after wards "Coach you have a incredible bunch of young men, congratulations."

It was an emotional moment for Coach Mudd who has never been in a picture with his team and asked if he could be in the picture with his Team and the guys were more than happy to include their coach in capturing this moment in time.

What adds to this story is that Boys the night before went to Dacula High School and took 1st place in Dacula Community Classic, so it was a double play weekend for South Gwinnett Boys Track.
