PeeWee Football Started Today...what a kick!

If you have PeeWee football in your area...check it out, It is a kick. Here in Redding, PeeWee football is taken seriously. My grandson is in his first year as a 6th grader, and it is a great learning experience for him. A lot of teaching of the basics; good conditioning; a lot of encouragement; and just a good game of football for these youngsters.

Today our team won, and in this area, the little teams are modeled after the high school teams, so all of the teams have basically the same formations, plays, and overall look. It paid off today as Foothill PeeWee overwhelmed the team from Siskiyou County.

Fun for all and a good experience for the kids, and even the parents.

For

For those of you that have been tracking the process of Christy Largent and Tom Engstrom adopting a little boy from China, this is an update. For those of you that have not heard of this story, here it is.

Christy and Tom, may daughter and son-in-law, adopted Amelia 3 ½ years ago. Amelia was born in the Chongqing area of Central China, and her first year was spent with a foster family, Chinese style, that was affiliated with an orphanage. Amelia arrived in Redding a happy, well-adjusted, and healthy little girl and for these past few years has thrilled us and been an amazement to all that have gotten to know her. She is a bright and fun-loving little girl that easily can "steal your heart".

About a year ago, Christy and Tom decided to try and adopt another child, but found that the process to get a girl had changed considerably, with as long as a two year waiting period once you have been approved. An alternate way to adopt would be to get a "special needs" child, which they decided to do. And, in China, they have allowed boys in this condition to be adopted, so Christy and Tom got on the list. Shortly after this, they were notified of a little boy, but before they could decide and get additional information on the condition of the child, he was adopted by another family. Then came the notice about another little boy that had a cleft palate. Christy and Tom moved quickly, and the next thing we knew they were making plans to travel again to Chongqing to adopt a child, this time a boy. That little bundle of joy is Graham.

Seeing him that first time at the airport with that big smile and a winning personality at that young age, no way would one think that he was a "special needs" child, but he was. The cleft palate was quickly evaluated by our local Pediatricians and it was determined that Graham should go ahead and get the surgery, for at this young age it would be done and over with quickly. That surgery took place this past week, and was very successful, and Graham is home and doing fine. A couple more days and he will be back to normal, eating and drinking as he wants to, and the "special need" is a thing of the past. The photo of Graham shows a somber little guy with little swelling, for his little jaw had to be widely opened for the surgery, but other than that, he had a big smile and a giggle for us today. What a guy!

We can be thankful for all things, both big and little, and we are sure thankful for Graham and for the fact the surgery went well and Graham will be fine in no time. You now know the story, and best wishes to all.

Farmers Market in Redding, CA

Does Anyone Care?

For For the two thousand, give or take, folks that shop at the Certified Farmers Market in downtown Redding on Saturday mornings, the question still is, does anyone care about the uneven gravel and rock surface on which half of the vendors have to set up? A few weeks ago I wrote about this, and again today when we were picking up our vegetables and fruits, it hit home again. Today, where Duzie's was giving a cooking demonstration, much like what our Doni Greenberg did a few weeks ago, there was a good crowd sitting in the shade, and a much larger crowd standing around the perimeter of the demonstration. Most of this "standing area" was in the dust and dirt and in the direct sun, and with the temperatures rising, not a very comfortable scene. Why do we allow this to go on? Is anyone concerned, other than the vendors?

First, the Market is not just a "temporary fixture" in town. It has been there for many years and will continue to be a part of the Redding scene from about May through November each year. It will continue to be a place where a number of vendors will bring their product for sale, and it will continue to generate about $500,000 to this aspect of our local community each year. Secondly, it is more than just a "market", in that it is a gathering place for both vendors with specialty products and for buyers that want something that they cannot get at Raley's or Winco. From artistic hand made soaps to Churn Creek bottom grown vegetables, there is a lot to choose from. Thirdly, it is the only place in town on Saturday where you can come out and meet your friends and neighbors in a non-rush, non-commercial setting and just enjoy an hour or so kind of "doing nothing" with no parking and crowd hassles. Yes, we have the nice Mt. Shasta Mall, and we have great stores, but we do not have another place like the Farmers Market?

Well, change only happens when someone calls attention to an issue, and if we are going to change the physical conditions at the Farmers Market, then citizens of Redding need to make this concern known to the City Council. With the upcoming elections, this might be a good question to ask of the candidates. This will also tell us if our candidates are really in tune with a local weekly activity that a lot of people enjoy and make part of their weekly schedules. Time will tell, but make your concerns known.

Shasta Voices Alert

08-22-08
Ron Largent

The State of California is considering "borrowing" or seizing local tax funds, redevelopment tax increment, and transportation tax funds from our Cities and Counties to balance their budget! There is nothing good about this for our local community. It would be the height of irresponsibility to take these funds when the voters have overwhelmingly passed measures to stop this destructive process, not once, but twice!

Shasta VOICES participated in a press conference yesterday together with officials from the City of Redding, City of Anderson, City of Shasta Lake, Shasta County, Chamber of Commerce, Shasta Builders Exchange, and Shasta Association of Realtors in opposition to balancing the state budget by seizing our local government funds. The entire community is working together regarding this timely and important issue!

We hope you would also be compelled to send letters in opposition to this proposal before it's too late. Feel free to use the attached letter as a guide in writing one of your own. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Thank you for your continued interest and support!
