REMINDER NOTICE TO MARYLAND LANDLORDS
Rental Property Update - Lead Poisoning Prevention Act of 2008 - Effective October 1, 2008
A new Maryland law will allow a tenant to terminate a lease when a property owner has not complied with Maryland's Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (LPPP). The law requires home contractors seeking a license to provide proof of lead paint abatement accreditation if the contractors provide such services. The bill allows a tenant to recover reasonable attorney fees and $2,500 in moving expenses. The Maryland Lead Poisoning Prevention Program requires owners of older residential rental properties (pre-1978) to meet specified risk reduction standards. The program is administered by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). For more information call the Lead Poisoning Hotline at 1.800.776.2706 or visit www.mde.state.md.us.

Gaithersburg Announces 2008 Citizen Police Academy
The Gaithersburg Police Department is now accepting applications for its Citizen Police Academy which begins Thursday, September 11, 2008. Weekly sessions will be held at the Bohrer Activity Center, located at 506 S. Frederick Avenue, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday night through November 6. Class size is limited to 16 residents who must be at least 16 years of age. The deadline for applications is Tuesday September 9, 2008.
During the Academy, participants will learn about law enforcement techniques and practices, traffic collision investigation, patrol operations, drug enforcement, crime prevention, community policing, and other topics. There will even be some practical demonstrations outside the classroom.
"The program provides a great synergy between the police department and the citizens of Gaithersburg," said Gaithersburg Chief of Police John King. "Academy participants are often very involved in their
community. Through this program they not only learn about the dynamics of a suburban police force, they take that knowledge back in to the community to share with co-workers, neighbors and friends, increasing
awareness and understanding of issues related to public safety." Applications may be downloaded from the City's website as of May 14.
Please visit www.gaithersburgmd.gov/police. To receive an application by mail or for more information contact Sgt. Rudy Wagner at 301-258-6400.
