Ocean County Fishermen Raise Money

There were 32 vendors from the tri-state area and approximately 600 people attended. Some came for breakfast or lunch. Others came looking for that special fishing rod that could help to bring in the big catch.

Fish stories were abundant at this flea market.

"We caught red salmon in the waters off Alaska," said O'Brien's longtime friend, Robert Daoust of Union.

Ron Di Stefano, busy selecting a graphite pole to surf fish on the beach at Seaside Park this year, said he caught a barracuda in Mexico.

Daoust, whose 14-foot boat is moored in The Highlands, said, "We hope we can be out next month. We are looking for stripers, blues, weakfish and fluke."

"When it comes to fish," said O'Brien, "we can eat them all. Fishing is great fun."

Local fishermen at the event agreed they cannot wait for the season to begin and swear by the fact that both boat and beach fishing off the New Jersey shore is great. Bob McGinley, who has been fishing for 55 years, said that he mostly surf fishes and has caught a 47-pound striped bass at Island Beach State Park.

Bayville Little League Project Announced

A new year, new beginnings and a new facility are ahead for Berkeley Township Little League, said Bob Everett, president, at the Moorage Avenue baseball complex.

"We have decided to call our new facility the Volunteer Community Center," he said on Saturday outside Berkeley Little League's long awaited all-weather practice facility.

Groundbreaking for the structure was held last summer. Everett said he would like to see the facility open its doors to the public by spring 2009.

Ocean County Trail

By spring of 2009, walkers, bicyclists, joggers and the like will be able to enjoy the first three miles of Ocean County's linear park, which starts in Barnegat Township and will eventually end in Toms River Township.

During a warm fall day recently, Ocean County officials gathered with staff members to review the progress of what is known as the Barnegat Branch Trail, a unique 15.6 mile linear park that follows the tracks of what was once the Central New Jersey Railroad Line.

The first phase of construction, completed earlier this year, runs from Burr Street in Barnegat Township to Pancoast Road in Ocean Township (Waretown).

Tax Appeal Contd.

YOU MAY BE ENTITLED TO A SUBSTANTIAL REBATE!

Look closely at your real estate tax assessment statement. The assessment figure on your current Notice of Assessment does not necessarily reflect the true value at which your building and land are assessed and taxed. Real Estate Tax Appeals must be filed by April 1, 2008.

Your municipality's average ratio of assessed value to true value must be known and applied to your assessment. A town assessing real property at, for example, $1 million, but which has an average ratio of assessed to true value of 50%, is really placing a value of $2 million on the property.

To estimate your tax bill, multiply your assessed value by your municipality's tax rate.

Note that your assessed value, based perhaps on the inflated real estate market of the 1980's, may not truly reflect the lower real estate values prevalent today. You have the legal right to appeal this assessed value and may be entitled to a substantial rebate.

Other factors may reduce your taxes. You may also be entitled to a substantial rebate based upon the following factors:

  • Machinery and equipment. Recent legislation and regulations eliminate the assessment of certain machinery, apparatus and equipment used in business or industry.
  • Transfer of title. A recent decision by the New Jersey Supreme Court holds that a town assessor cannot increase an assessment merely because title to the property has been transferred.
  • Wetlands. Imposition of Flood Hazard regulations or denial of a Freshwater Wetlands permit will almost certainly give you a basis for seeking a reduction in your assessment.
  • Legally imposed restrictions. Rent control and Mount Laurel restrictions might very well justify reductions in assessed valuations.
