Is it so hard to ask for Referrals?

12-17-08
Ryan Gale

Hello everyone,

It is nice to blog to you today. I have an issue that I feel is something that actually affects numerous realtors. Asking for referrals. This is difficult to many, because of a wide range of reasons. The main reason I find is that people are embarassed to ask for them. They feel vulnerable asking for help, something which manifests itself in Real Estate and the world in general. No one wants to look like they need the help, because in some peoples mind it could be considered personal failure. I will speak later on failure and how it is not really a bad thing.

How often have you come across a Realtor and asked, How are thing s going for you? They reply emphatically with "Things are great". This is said with a certain level of hollowness. They want everyone to believe they are doing great, when actually they have one foot out the door and contemplating a move to another career. We need to be able to face the truth, that things are not great for the bulk of us in the trenches out there. ONce we come to terms with the fact that things are not great, it becomes easier to ask others for help. This is where our circle of clients, friends and past transactions come into play. Let me give you a story real quick.

I had just hung up the phone with another client who had decided to wait until next year. I stared at my bank statement and shook my head in disbelief. What to do to add bucks to my account. I picked up the phone about to call my sphere and hung up, feeling sad that I was going to ask for help. I thought about this and then picked up the phone and hesitatantly dialed the first number. The client we will call her , Jen, was so happy to hear from me. We spoke for a bit and I found out she was doing well. Towards the end of the conversation I asked her somewhat sheepishly if she could refer anyone she knew that was interested in buying or selling real estate. SHe said she would gladly do so and the conversation ended soon after. I hung up the phone and told myself, lets see what happens. Not even a week later Jen called me, telling me about some people she knew from church that was in need of a home before the holidays. I met with them and the next Saturday we went looking at homes. We did so for a couple of weeks and we found the perfect house for them. To make a long story short, 2 and a half months late I was placing my 12,000 commmision into my bank. Wow, this really works.

How much easier is it to work the people you know then to go out cold calling or door knocking. So my advice is to swallow your pride and do your job as a Realtor. Speak with everyone you know, they know how hard Real Estate is now, and if they are your friends or family or even past clients they would be more than happy to help you grow your business. I will continue to write ideas on my blog as the days go, enjoy reading this and I hope it helps you. Remember "your referrals are your greatest gift to me" after e-mails and mailings.

prayers for Galveston and Houston

Hello everyone how is it going today. I have been reading and watching the news with deep sadness and shock. Hurricane Ike, though a very short name, packed a powerful 1-2 punch to Galveston And Houston. From what I read 4 blocks of homes and businesses closest to the Gulf were literally wiped off the face of the Earth. This has left a horrible situation in Galveston, liken to Katrina of 3 yrs ago. Houston is not much better off with lots of damage and still 77% of people without power.

What can we do to help? Well for one we can all pray for them. It does not matter what religion you practice, we all answer to some higher power. The positive energy that we give off through the power of prayer will have some affect.

Aside from that we need to do what we can to help raise the awareness of Hurricane threats. We are Realtors and are very visible in the communities that we work in. We have built many relationships and our clients trust us. This is a very special relationship to me as it should be for you. I saw so many people on the news, saying "I got some beer and I am going to sit on my porch and watch the terror of the storm." What is wrong with them? Their thinking is a bit off, almost like they know what could happen, but after so many false alarms, they think it will be a "weak storm" They do not understand that even a tropical storm can cause huge amounts of damage and sadness.

So if there were Realtors in galveston they could have tried to warn their clients and they in turn warn their friends. This would causa "tipping point" that would have gotten more people out of Galveston. We as Realtors have the trust of our clients and we can help "learn" them of potential dangers, be it the Real Estate market or Hurricanes.

Thank you for reading my blog, I hope you continue to do so in the future.

Calm is Important

With the recent events that have unfolded today I am sure many people are very nervous. Lehman Brothers has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and in order to not go belly up Merrill Lynch has been taken over by Bank of America. This is very bad for the economy as represented today by the stock market dropping. Us Realtors, must stay calm and positive. If we Real Estate Agents get scared and distraught, then it will reflect in our business ethic and that is "no bueno".

I am currently brainstorming outside the box ideas to fuel my Real Estate Business for the next 18 months...I will be trying out and testing whatever comes to my mind....I hope I will have some positive results I will keep everyone informed of any success or failures encountered.

Have a great evening....Monday night football game is going to be great!!!

Hello how is everyone...

This is my first blog ever, but I would like to say that I will be posting some great stuff. I feel like I have a great grasp of the world including our challenging market. My view is optimistic and I realize that regardless of the difficulty of the market we can still make money....So for my first blog I would like to say hello.

My name is Ryan Gale and my partner is Vanda Lorungrochana. We work with Keller Williams Realty in gaithersburg. Our office is wonderful and there are lots of great people in our office. We have been in the business long enough to know how the systems work. Vanda has been in the business for 5 years while I have been really going stong for less than a year. We have had a great first year together and our business will show a profit for the first year, rather amazing is it not.

We both graduated from University of Maryland, go Terps.....Our combination perfectly balances each others strengths and weaknesses. We work hard and we have had noticeable results. Our profiles are on our website which you can access through active rain.

I would like to begin by telling everyone the secret to making money and enjoying this business.. The key ingredient is BURNING DESIRE.... We must be intense with our purpose and set forth vigorous goals. There is so many different ways to make money in this business you just have to do the work. When I wake up in the morning I ma ready to go and excited about what will happen that day. I always sit in silence for a bit in the morning and amp up my energy for the day ahead. One day I am doing previewing, the next I have 2 appointments, it is ever changing. BUt I set my Desire for my goals. Now I am not saying you must become obssessed, that will cause a burnout, you just need to be focused.

A book that everyone in this business should read is the book writeen by Dale Carnegie many years ago called THINK AND GROW RICH. I would strongly suggest that if you want your business to grow exponentially, read this book. Carnegie has time-tested and proven methods to going to the next level. It is an easy read and I hope you all take advantage of it.

Well that is all for now I hope that I may encounter some of you in business and we can be successful...Remember the key to this busines is BURNING DESIRE...

Thank you
