I've never been to the Tallmadge Circle on 9-11. It has been the tradition each year to light 2,974 candles in honor of the slain civilians, firefighters, policemen and government workers killed on that terrible day. It's amazing that all the candles fit on the paths in the circle, just as if it was always meant to be.
The white candles are for the civilians who died.
The red candles are for the firefighters.
The blue candles are for the police.
And the green are for those who died at the Pentagon.
Inside the Tallmadge Congregational Church, a video memorial was playing, commemorating the events and timeline of the tragedy.
Truly a beautiful and touching memorial to the lives sacrificed on that awful day.
"Run with endurance the race set before you..." Hebrews 12:1

Today was the 24th annual "Labor of Love Run," a fundraising event for Akron Pregnancy Services, sponsored by The Chapel. The event included a one-mile fun run/walk followed by a five-mile race beginning at the Akron Campus. Participants enjoyed music, door prizes, refreshments, and a sports expo! My son Grant ran this five-mile race for the first time, right before a job interview - what a guy - and my daughter and I did the one-mile fun run/walk (it was all walking for me!).

Here is some of the fun on the One-Mile that began at 8:30 a.m.

Spicer Village Townhomes loaned three Segways to volunteers at the race!

We actually made it to the finish line in about 21 minutes (that includes time for taking pix for blogging!).

Then the Five-Mile began!

There were relay runners, runners pushing strollers, walker/runners, mini-competitions between runners, and lots of cheering for anyone who participated. I can't say who won the race, but I can tell you he was done in about the time that took everyone to run just one lap.
Here is AR member Daniel Salmons and wife Kim - Dan ran with two kids in a stroller! That's commitment!

It was a great way to spend Labor Day!

These shots are from River Day 2008, which was held in May. The Cuyahoga River is making such a spectacular comeback. This event draws volunteers and citizens who have helped and continue to help the river again be enjoyed by wildlife and humans.
The celebration this year in Munroe Falls offered volunteer opportunities, a farmer's market, a petting zoo, live animals, food and treats served by Friends of the Park as they raise funds to support the park, live music, cornhole games, a book sale, a visit by Smokey the Bear, exhibits and OEPA fish population sampling demo.
There was also a sausage and pancake breakfast, and lunch was served.
Friends of the Park is looking for volunteers. Come enjoy the river and have fun improving the environment!
