Last week's Creative Loafing included a pull out section called "Urban Explorer Handbook." It's Creative Loafing's guide to people, places and things primarily inside 2-85. One thing was missing though....the southern portion of 2-85 including Lakewood, East Point, Hapeville and College Park. I guess Creative Loafing doesn't believe that "cool" people live in this area and that there are not "cool" places and things. I was a bit upset, so I wrote a letter to the editor:
Dear Editor,
As an Atlanta native, I was excited when I picked up this week's copy of Creative Loafing. I couldn't wait to check out the Urban Explorer's Handbook. As I read through the 'Hoods, I could not find my own neighborhood. I live south of Atlanta in Hapeville - still inside 2-85. You can get to my neighborhood from downtown Atlanta in less than 10 minutes. The same growth and development that you described going on in other parts of the city is happening in Hapeville and our sister cities - East Point and College Park. The original Corner Tavern that has locations in Little Five Points and Edgewood started in East Point. We also have a Thumb's Up cafe, Noodle, Landmark Diner, Oz Pizza...just to name a few. Hapeville features the nationally recognized Buttersweet Bakery that's been featured in numerous local and national publications. We are also experiencing a housing resurgence with new lofts, townhomes, condos and single family homes. In addition, it has been rumored in numerous business publications that Jacoby Properties (the developer of Atlantic Station) has the defunct Ford plant under contract with a vision of another mini city to support the local community and the airport. InterCiti Partners has announced a residential component called Asbury Park and will feature 2,500 new housing units. I hope you find this information helpful and will consider the Tri Cities for your next Urban Explorer's Handbook.
