DWI in a La-Z-Boy?

You can get a DWI in anything with a motor, including a La-Z-Boy.Apparently, you can get a DWI while operating ANYTHING with a motor. A Minnesota man was arrested after plowing his motorized La-Z-Boy into a parked car. His blood alcohol level was 0.29, more than three times the legal limit. This motorized bad boy was tricked out with a stereo and cup holders. Who says Minnesota doesn't know how to party!

2009 Great California Shakeout Today

2009 Great California Shake OutAt 10:15 this morning (October 15, 2009), millions of Californians will be participating in the Great California Shakeout today, a simultaneous earthquake drill. The Shakeout is designed to help prepare Californians in the event of a 7.0 magnitude or higher earthquake. Schools, government offices and businesses around the state will be shown safety measures, such as dropping down low, covering themselves under a heavy piece of furniture for protection and holding on until the shaking finishes. Californians will also be shown how to check the utilities and where to turn off the gas to prevent possible fires or explosions from possible gas leaks. It's also a good time to make sure you have an earthquake kit prepared, which includes enough food, medicine, water, clothing and medical supplies for 3 days for each member of the family or business. I certainly hope you get to participate in the Great California Shakeout today.

NASCAR NATION: California Natives Rule at Pepsi 500 in Fontana

The California natives ruled at the Pepsi 500 in Fontana, CA on Sunday, October 11, 2009. Once again, Hendrick Motorsports proved why they own the Auto Club Speedway. I guess this is apropos for the company who is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. After Jessie McCartney skipped a line or two of the National Anthem (practicing the national anthem before you perform it in front of a bunch of rednecks might be a good idea), grand marshal Kelsey Grammar gave the "Gentlemen, start your engines!" to begin the first Sprint Cup race to come to Southern California. Jimmie Johnson quickly overtook pole sitter Denny Hamlin to get out front. The only other real contender for first place for most of the race was Juan Pablo Montoya, who started his typical aggressive first place bid around lap 25. It began to look like it was going to be a pretty boring race between just Jimmie and JPM, with the rest of the field left in their dust. However, the last 50 or so laps turned into a nail-biter. You know that the points are close when you get a caution for debris, another caution 4 laps later and then another caution on the restart of the last caution when so many cars get bunched up together and cause "the big one". Unfortunately for Dale Jr, his streak of bad luck continued, as he got accidentally turned by the guy behind him and started "the big one". Jr was actually having quite a spectacular day, too. I felt bad for the dude. This Jeff Gordon girl was on the edge of her seat hoping Jeff could pull ahead of Jimmie when they began their last restart with only 3 laps to go. Unfortunately, Jimmie got a great restart and jumped ahead of the pack again. JPM challenged Jeff for 2nd before Jeff edged him out at the end. With Mark Martin finishing 4th and Tony Stewart finishing 5th, four out of the top 5 finishers for the Pepsi 500 in Fontana had Hendrick Motorsports engines in them. It was a good day for HMS. But, both Jimmie and Mark need to watch out because Juan Pablo Montoya is quickly heading their way. The next Sprint cup race will be on Saturday, October 17th at 7pm EST on ABC in Charlotte. See ya there!

Who Says It Never Rains in Southern California?

Who says it never rains in Southern California?

Who says it never rains in Southern California?  On Monday, I had the distinct pleasure of finally meeting face-to-face with a wonderful friend I met here in the Rain: Mary Yonkers.  And, let me tell ya...her profile photo doesn't do her justice.  She is even more beautiful in person.  She and her husband were at the tail end of a fabulous Alaskan cruise and I even got an exclusive sneak peek at the photos from her trip.  Thanks to fellow 'Rainer Russell Ray, Mary, her sweet husband Dave and I met up at The Beach House in Cardiff-by-the-Sea.  We got to have fabulous conversation, great food and wonderful views for a couple of hours.  Mary and I got along like old friends.  We all even laughed while watching a couple of people teach their dog how to surf.  Only in Southern California will you see a dog in a lifejacket successfully standing upright on a surfboard on a random Monday morning.  The dog did much better than I think I ever could.  However does a dog scrunch up its paws to hold onto the board?  As we said our goodbyes, I knew that I had Active Rain to thank for bringing me such a great new friend.  I think I'm going to have to make a trip back east to see Mary and Dave again.  I had such a wonderful time just having lunch.  Who knows what we could accomplish with more time on our hands?  Poor Dave will NEVER get a word in edgewise!
