Riverside's Heritage House: A Study in Victorian Splendor

Riverside's Heritage House is a beautiful Victorian mansion in Riverside, CA Riverside's Heritage House is a beautiful Victorian mansion in Riverside, CA

Last weekend, my son and I were able to go our very own historical landmark: the Heritage House in Riverside, CA. Even though I have lived in this area for over 20+ years, I have never actually set foot inside of it until last weekend. It's absolutely beautiful. Built in 1891 by Mrs. Catharine Bettner, the Heritage House was chosen to be an example of what was typical Victorian architecture in Riverside's burgeoning youth. Since there is no air conditioning to the upper floor of the home, it is closed in July and August (the hottest months of the year). In fact, this weekend is the last hurrah until September 2009.

To hear a brief history and see some great photographs I took while visiting the Heritage House, please click here.

To celebrate it's last open date before the doors close for the summer, the Heritage House is hosting an old fashioned ice cream social that is absolutely FREE to the public on Sunday, June 28, 2009 from 12-4pm. Come on down, cool off from the heat and enjoy a taste of yesteryear at one of the oldest and most beautifully interesting homes in Riverside, CA.

I'm Not Light-Headed, I'm Heavy-Stomached

Jason's Deli at 2555 Canyon Springs Parkway in Riverside CAYesterday, I took my son out to eat lunch at a fabulous little place called Jason's Deli. This great little find is located at 2555 Canyon Springs Parkway on the border of Riverside and Moreno Valley, near March Air Reserve Base. When we went yesterday, many of the soldiers that work at March ARB happened to be eating there as well. We managed to beat the lunch crowd by arriving a little earlier than noon. But, right after we got there, the line wound around the back wall. My parents always like to eat here when they come into town and, pull my arm, I take them there. They have franchises all over the country. They have also been named as one of the most healthy menus around by Parents magazine thanks to their use of organic food whenever possible. I've had their Turkey Wrap, potato cheese soup, Sergeant Pepper Po'boy and, yesterday, settled in for their salad bar. My son absolutely adores their MeataBalla Po'boy. When my son was finished, he proclaimed "I'm not light-headed. I'm heavy-stomached" while patting his bulging (well, bulging for the stick figure of a kid he is) belly.

Classic car enthusiasts should stop by our local Jason's Deli this Friday, June 26th from 5-8pm to see some amazingly restored classic cars in all their beauty. You get to enjoy the music of the 50's, 60's and 70's as well as awards, raffles and a 50/50 drawing.

Also, Jason's Deli is offering a "Kids eat FREE on Sundays" deal for all kids accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kids get to pick any meal off of the JR menu and the offer is limited to one JR meal per child per dine in visit. The laid back atmosphere allows you to get a big group of people together for Sunday brunch without causing a big fuss or hassle. Just push a few tables together and you can get the party started. So, come on down so you can be "heavy-stomached", too. You won't regret it!

NASCAR Nation: Yes He Kahne - Recap of Sonoma Spring Cup Race 2009

Kasey Kahne wins the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Sonoma's Infineon Raceway on June 21, 2009.

Holy smokes, folks! Another great race. Lots of spinning, lots of rubbin' and lots of smoke. After a couple of last minute caution flags and shoot-out style restarts, Washington State's very own Kasey Kahne ended a year long winless streak to edge out Tony Stewart for the checkered flag at Sonoma's Infineon Raceway this afternoon. The Tasmanian Devil himself, Marcos Ambrose, ran a fantastic race and ended up 3rd. This is why I love the road race format. You never know what you're going to end up with. A spinout on a road race doesn't necessarily bring out the caution flag. And we had lots of spinouts without yellow flags, believe me. Even after a penalty through pit row for speeding, Jimmie Johnson ended up 4th. Jeff Gordon was guilty of speeding on pit road as well and, after serving his lap through pit row at pit row speed under green, he managed to battle his way to finish in the top 10 at 9th. Points standings still stay pretty much the same, with Tony Stewart in 1st, Jeff Gordon 2nd and Jimmie Johnson in 3rd. Next Sunday (June 28th), we go back to the east coast for racing at Loudon, New Hampshire beginning at 1:30pm EST on TNT. See you there!

NASCAR NATION: Lifelock 400 at Michigan International Speedway

Holy cow! What a way to race to the finish, folks! When Kid Rock is the grand marshal and gives the ("Gentlemen, start...your...engines" cue at the beginning of the race, you know it's gotta be good! After running away with the lead for most of the 200 laps, Jimmie Johnson appeared to have the checkered flag all but in his little hands when, at one lap to go, he ran out of fuel. Heartbreakingly, Jimmie went from 1st place at the white flag (1 lap to go) to finish 22nd, after coasting into pit road, getting a splash and dash of fuel and crossing the start/finish line on pit row. After Jimmie began his coast out of 1st, Greg Biffle looked like he may be able to sit back and win this one. But then HE ran out of fuel around the final turns 3 and 4. The little jockey, Mark Martin, sprinted to the finish line to win it all, with my boy Jeff Gordon finishing 2nd, which was especially rewarding since Jeff had to start at the back of the field after blowing an engine after qualifying. Jimmie's on my team and I have alot of respect for how awesome his talent is (he has won 3 championships in a row). But, I have to admit, when he lost his fuel gamble, there was a bit of a hootin' going on in my house. Then, when Biffle's gamble ran out, there was a bit more hollerin' going on. And when Mark crossed the finish line under his own power (barely) and my Jeffie boy came in 2nd, there was whole lotta HOOTIN' and a-HOLLERIN' goin' on! Jimmie took the loss as a real champion, too, by saying basically that sometimes you gamble and win and sometimes you gamble and lose. Unfortunately, he was on the losing end this time. And that doesn't happen very often. It was much better than when Biffle all but tried to blame Jimmie for the fact that #16 ran out of gas, too. It was Greg's contention that he would have been able to finish with plenty of gas to spare if Jimmie hasn't have raced him so hard. The flip side to that coin is that Greg coulda just let Jimmie go by and ran behind him for the last few laps of the race. But, I didn't see that happen either.

Since I was traveling back home from an out-of-town family wedding last weekend and my DVR didn't record the Pocono race, this was the first time I got to see the double-file, shoot-out style racing. And, I LOVED IT! That was great. It was like watching the beginning of a race every time there was a caution flag thrown (there were 3, I believe, for this race). I think it's great that the guys up front don't have to contend with lapped traffic on restarts. How do you feel about it?

The next NASCAR Sprint Cup race will be one of my favorites at Sonoma on Sunday, June 21st at 4:30pm EST on TNT. I love the road race format. It makes for some interesting driving. It doesn't hurt that my boy Jeff Gordon is pretty good here.
