Are we ready for more good news? Things are certainly looking up in Windsor! It's been a long time coming! Now we learn that a Michigan based company EarthTronics/WindTronics, is close to reaching an agreement with the province to build small wind turbines in Windsor. This is expected to create up to 200 jobs. It's expected to set up shop in the former Magna International plant on the Windsor's west side.

The company's turbines produce power at the ends of the turbine blades instead of at the centre of the unit where a traditional turbine powers a gearbox. As a result of this design, which significantly reduces mechanical resistance, the unit can be manufactured to power a large commercial sized unit or small residential unit. The units likely to be made available through large hardware chains, could cost as much as $5000.

The new 315-bed South West Detention Centre, which will replace the dated and overcrowded Windsor Jail on Brock Street, will be built on a 30 acre property next to the Croatian Club on Concession 8 just north of Highway 401.

Construction isn't expected to begin until January 2011, but it's probably worth about $90 million to $100 million. It's unfortunate that it's such a slow moving project but it is a big project that is expected to generate alot of jobs. The province would like to see as many as possible of the estimated 150 construction jobs go to Windsorites.

Add this to the excitement of all the work about to be generated by the DRIC project I spoke of in my last post and it may be possible that Windsor will break free from it's history as being a "lunch bucket" town.

The Province of Ontario has approved the environmental assessment for the Windsor-Essex Parkway (DRIC) allowing preliminary work to begin this fall on the $1.6 billion route to a new Detroit River crossing! The project is part of a $5 billion binational effort to create a new Detroit River bridge. The 6 kilometre parkway in the Huron Church Road - Talbot Road corridor includes 11 overpasses that will cover 1.8 kilmetres of the route, creating 300 acres of green space.

What does this mean for Windsor?

THE CREATION OF 15,000 CONSTRUCTION JOBS!

In addition, there is the recently launched $50 million underpass on Howard Ave.

THE CREATION OF APPROX. 1,300 JOBS!

This is good news for the citizens of Windsor, Essex-County.

As MPP Dwight Duncan said, " With Windsor at the "epicenter" of the global recession, now is the time to get the border work underway."
