Every business eventually will face growing pains, no matter how small or how large and how each person acts to the growing of the business will be one of the determine factors how and if a business will grow later.
Each person has a part in the growth and sometimes a decision has to be made if each person is in the right position or if they would be better in a different area...or just let go.
A recent example I can think of was a contractor who had decided to expand their business into a different area of a market but still within their area of general expertise. In matter to facilitate the growth the company hired, a well-known and very experienced manager for the area. Within the company, they promoted a manager to the general manager's position to oversee the growth and to support the managers in the newly created area.
The general manger received training and directions on how to deal with people and situations when they arise. Directions to him where, that he support to the managers and not to work as the on-site mangers, to give directions, step back, and trust the manger to do their job.
One day the general manger came to one of the jobsites, did not even looked for the onsite manger, grabbed a shovel and jumped into the newly created hole and started shoveling.....
Why I am telling you this story?
When you are planning to grow your business, you need to trust your team you have hired. When one part of your team is not doing what they where instructed to do, you might have to revisit your managements team structure and reshuffle your team until it is either in the right position or let it go.......
You cannot grow a business alone, you need the team to help you grow, or otherwise you will reach a point that you are to large to handle the customer flow by yourself and then your personal success will pull you under.........
Goals
•· Not only have the goals; write them down
•· Revisit the goals at least once a month
•· Set time frames when to achieve each goal
•· Set a measuring point on how to measure the goal
Good Habits
•· Set at daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly schedule
•· Write it down
•· Be consistent anything you do
•· Incorporate your family, and employees in the plan or planning
•· Volunteer on a regular basis
•· Reflect over the previous day, when something went wrong try to find out what you could have done different.
Create how-to manuals
Create a how- to manual for every part of your business, so when you have to train your employees they know exactly what the expectations are in each department there are working in. ( I will just name a few)
•· Front desk
•· Marketing
•· Inside and outside Sales
•· Independent contractor
•· IT
•· Billing
Stand out from the crowed
•· survey your current clients to find out why there are working with you and what they want from a company like yours
•· survey your employees to find out why there are staying or possible planning got leave
•· Can you truly deliver what your clients are looking for
•· Have you elevator speech ready, on how and why you are different
Know your numbers
•· Know where your leads are coming from
•· Why is a customer leaving or joining you
•· Know your company's income by a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis
•· Know your employee turnover and why there are leaving
Be a better leader
•· Give your employees achievable goals and expectations to achieve
•· Hold them accountable and let them set the time to achieve the goal
•· Follow up with them on a regular basis
•· Do at least an annual review. Quarterly or monthly follow-up is the best way to stay in touch and catch inconsistencies and stand-out's
•· Find out why they do what they do, to be able to find their "hot button" and to get them going into the right direction. (It takes a manager to fire a person but it takes a leader to push a person to achievement, my personal quote)
Dream and choose your future
•· Pick the company you keep very carefully. Positive company will foster positive thoughts and feeling; negative will pull you down.
•· Seek out a mentor that will keep you going into the right direction. The person can be with in a different same field of work, and should be willing to give honest and constructive feedback.
•· Set personal challenges to accomplish.
