Looking for a Job...make your résumé or applications stand out

This is such a bizarre topic for me, being in Real Estate but people who are unemployed affect us all. Today here in AR the posting from Midori Miller-Respectfully To The White House had me thinking.

Then this morning though the email I received a newsletter from one of the local newspaper talking about, when there are positions open the resumes and applications poor in.

I am by far no expert in resume writing and filling out applications. The only insight I have is when I receive applications from job seekers, who asking me to forward their information to a prospective employer I might know.

Looking at AR with 148,468 members about 10% off them are direct affected by a job loss. When any company posts a job opening, I am, sure they are now receiving between 100 and 300 applications.

I talked to one of my local recruiters last week and she has told me that it takes her days to go through all of the applications she receives for job openings and here is some of the basic info she has given me, why she rejects an application

  • Applicants do not follow basic application instructions.
  • Application have a lot of basic errors
  • Many applications are to long, and she has no time to read through all of the information
  • Basic contact information can not be found on an application
  • You did not outline what you can bring to the company and how you could be an asset to them. She told me that is the first thing she would like to read.
  • Resume not tailored for the job it was intended for

She gave me some ideas on how an applicant can improve their chances on getting the interview

  • When you give out your phone number for her to call, make certain you have your voice mail box set up and it is not full.
  • For the phone Voice mail, don't have your 5 years old put the outgoing Voice Mail message on the Recorder.
  • When you give her an email to contact, please get back with her wit in 24 hours.
  • Use quality paper for the application
  • When you have to, find a resume writer to help you with your resume
