BLUEGRASS DANCE CALENDAR: June 27 - July 3, 2011

Birthday dance circle at Hepcats Swing DanceBLUEGRASS DANCE CALENDAR
Ballroom, Swing, Latin and Other Social Dancing In and Around Lexington, Ky
June 27 - July 3, 2011

Ballroom dancing, swing dancing, Latin dancing and any form of social dancing is a great way to get some exercise, meet new people, and have some good clean fun. I have been participating in ballroom and swing dancing for the last 15 years, so naturally, I like to keep in touch with what kind of dance events are happening in my community. There are several places in the Bluegrass Region to attend dancing events. The Bluegrass Region of Kentucky is defined generally as Lexington, Ky area (Fayette County) and the immediately surrounding counties.

This Week's Dance News:

It's pretty lean this week! The upcoming holiday has a few of the regular dances cancelled or postponed. But there are still a couple of opportunities to get out there and dance! Monday's English Country Dance practice session is still up for grabs, as well as the Wednesday night Tango practica. Friday, the two offerings in Lexington are: the Mostly Waltz Social Dance, with instruction on Blues dancing - this is a nice dance to go to if you like to go whirling around the floor in the traditional circular waltz! - and the First Free Friday Latin Night at The Salsa Center. As the name implies, there is no cost to attend this dance, giving you an opportunity to sample the atmosphere, tunes and moves, and meet the friendly people at The Salsa Center, which is now my favorite place to go dancing! If you're in Madison County on Friday night, stop by the Bluegrass Dance Center. Their dance party admission includes a one-hour workshop prior to the dance. A recent refresher workshop from them on Hustle and I was ready to shake my groove thang! There is a Contra Dance scheduled for Saturday night if you like to hop and stomp, however, please note the change in location for this event. Sunday, you're on your own - it looks like everything has been cancelled in observance of the holiday!

Remember, Lexington, Ky celebrates the Fourth of July all weekend long this year! There are events happening from Thursday all the way through Monday at different locations around the city, including the fireworks celebration on Saturday night and an all-day festival in Downtown on Monday! For more information, check out the schedule of events at the DLC website.

ABOUT THE DANCES
If you are not familiar with the different types of social dances, here is a primer:

Ballroom Dancing
Most people are familiar with what ballroom dancing is these days, even the younger crowd, thanks to the popularity of the show Dancing with the Stars. However, there are actually two different types of ballroom dancing in general. The type of dancing seen on Dancing with the Stars is the international, competitive style ballroom dancing. The moves and techniques the show participants are being taught and judged by are part of a world-wide standard used for the judging of international ballroom dance competitions, just as with any other international competitive sport. Therefore, the moves, posture and embellishments being taught are very specific to the competitive world.

The "social" style of ballroom dancing, however, is a more relaxed style that was/is used by the everyday person when dancing out in public with friends and partners. The basic moves taught are usually the same, with some variations on tempo, and less emphasis put on precise posture and embellishments. Individual dances grouped under the ballroom category include Waltz (International, American and Viennese styles), Foxtrot (International, American and Freestyle), some Latin dances such as Cha-cha, Rumba and Tango, East Coast Swing (aka Jive in Competitive ballroom) and West Coast Swing. Many other styles of dances may be taught by ballroom dance studios, including less well-known foreign dances.

Swing Dancing
Swing Dancing has a rich history dating back to the early 1930's beginning with the Lindy Hop (aka Jitterbug). Other types of Swing dancing include East Coast Swing, West Cost Swing, Jive, Balboa, Rockabilly, Shag and Boogie Woogie. Lindy hop even has two or more distinct styles: the original Savoy style, and later Hollywood style. Swing dancing is usually danced to 8 count music with intermixed 8 count and 6 count steps, and can be danced to varying tempos of music, but mostly upbeat. Some dances were designed specifically to be danced to a certain tempo - for example, Balboa was developed as a way to keep up with extremely fast tempos that were too fast to dance to with other dance styles. As with the ballroom dances, the competitive ballroom community has their own style of swing dances as opposed to the more social styles danced at public dance parties.

English Country Dancing
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to dance in the style of the Jane Austin era movies? Well, here's your chance! The Lexington Vintage Dance Society focuses on historical dances from the Regency era and others, such as the Civil War era. These dances are graceful and social, sometimes slow and elegant, sometimes upbeat and lively. A specific dance routine is picked for each song, and then danced with a partner, usually within groups of four or six. Dancers form lines and as the routine is repeated, partners rotate through different groups of people. For people with little or no social dance experience, English Country Dancing is the perfect introduction to learning steps in an easy, slow, casual environment. No partner is needed to join these dance parties.

Contra Dancing
Take English Country Dancing, speed it up and give it some honkey-tonk and you've got Contra Dancing. A bit more like Square Dancing, Contra Dancing is a descendant of English Country Dancing, having been infiltrated by different cultures, and the more casual attitude of country folk after it emigrated to the U.S. This is another partner dance that is usually danced in lines and moves in and through groups. The biggest difference is probably the music, since it is almost always upbeat. Get ready for a workout, since you'll be hopping, stomping and spinning all night long with this dance.

This Week's Dance News:

I went to a Salsa dance party on Sunday at the Salsa Center. Only my second time there, it is quickly becoming my favorite dance place. Honestly, this has got to be the most open and friendly group of people I have met so far in my four years of living in Lexington. Last week there was a smallish crowd at the Salsa party, but out of only about 15 people, there were four races and at least 6 different countries represented, giving me the single most culturally diverse social experience I've had since moving here. As far as the dancing itself goes, I can't say enough about it. Reena Cobo and her partner Abel (sounds like "the bell") are teaching the authentic Cuban style of Salsa and other dances. This is not your "typical" Latin dancing, as it has not been influenced by ballroom dancing.

Just the little bit of work I've done so far with them and I am having to relearn everything - frame and posture, hand-hold, footwork and "feeeeeling" the music. I realize now how stiff all the ballroom training has made me. Abel is trying to get me to loosen up - he says "This is Cuban dance. Just start moving to the music, and then start dancing when you both are together. It looks wrong to be standing there counting, waiting for some point in the music." This style of dancing is not so dependent on the feet hitting a certain place on a certain count. The patterns are not so integral to the dance. Abel said to me: "People want me to count - 1, 2, 3...I can't count, I just move my feet." Reena will count for you, though - so they make a good complement to each other as teachers, with Reena teaching the technical stuff and Abel coming along and teaching you how to throw it all out the window and just move!

Monday, Wednesday and Friday regulars this week - English Country, Tango Practica, and Ballroom in Lexington and Richmond. A bit off-topic, but on Friday night if you would rather watch some dance, Natasha's Bistro and Bar in downtown Lexington is presenting Rakadu, a local dance performance group. "Rakadu is live music, Middle Eastern Belly Dance, Ancient Hula and Flamenco dancing of Spain at its finest." Saturday, Natasha's Bistro and Bar is hosting a DJ'd Latin dance party. No Contra dancing in Lexington this week, but there is a Contra Dance in Berea on Saturday evening. Sunday, come on over to the Salsa Center and learn some Cuban Salsa moves, snacks provided! Bop Club ballroom party reconvenes this Sunday as well. Happy dancing!

Latin DancingSalsa Jam, Alhambra, Ca 1996
Latin dances are most known for their energy, passion and sensuality, often appearing emotionally wild and unrestrained. Most typical Americans are exposed to Latin dancing through ballroom dancing, but this is Latin dancing changed by the application of international competitive standards, and is not an accurate representation of true Latin dancing. There is nothing wrong with ballroom style Latin dancing, of course, but if you want to experience authentic Latin dancing, you will have to get into the Latin neighborhood clubs that haven't been infiltrated by ballroom moves. Different dances originated in different countries and each carry the flavor of that culture. For example, Salsa originated in Cuba, Tango in Argentina; the attitudes in each of these dances are going to be wildly different from how the dance is presented through ballroom style dance, which tends to give a homogeneous feel to all the dances. If you have learned Latin dancing via ballroom, and then learn an authentic version of a dance, don't be surprised to find yourself having to learn the dance all over again!

Ballroom, Swing, Latin and Other Social Dancing In and Around Lexington, Ky

Ballroom dancing, swing dancing, Latin dancing and any form of social dancing is a great way to get some exercise, meet new people, and have some good clean fun. I have been participating in ballroom and swing dancing for the last 15 years, so naturally, I like to keep in touch with what kind of dance events are happening in my community. There are several places in the Bluegrass Region to attend dancing events. The Bluegrass Region of Kentucky is defined generally as Lexington, Ky area (Fayette County) and the immediately surrounding counties.

This Week's Dance News: Clean but effective, is what I would call this week's lineup. Not a whole lot going on, but good quality events. Simple-more-better, right? Monday, Wednesday and Friday we have the regulars - the weekly English Country Dance practice session on Monday, the Tango practice session on Wednesday and the Ballroom Dance Party in Richmond on Friday.

I want to highlight the other Friday dance, since it only happens monthly - the English Country Dance at LexArts. This is the group that teaches the dances from Regency Era England, a.k.a. the "Jane Austin" dances. I know there's a bunch of ladies out there who are dying to learn how to do these dances, and they are so fun and easy, and the regulars are very friendly and supportive - and they have a live music combo. So grab a male partner (only because they are usually in short supply) and head on over to LexArts on the 3rd Floor.

On Saturday is a Swing Dance presented by the Hepcats. These are always great parties to go to, even to just watch. It's only $5 and they provide refreshments and Mike always plays a really great assortment of swing music. If you like these dances, you'd better catch this one because the next one isn't until July 9th!

Last but certainly not least, there is a Salsa dance on Sunday evening at The Salsa Center. I went to my first dance party there last week and was not disappointed! Reena Cobo is a great teacher and the pre-dance workshop was a group dance called Casino Rueda, a type of group salsa dance. Call it Latin Line Dancing if you'd like, except this one was done in a circle. I really love the Cuban influence to the dances they are teaching there, which really adds a lot of variety to the run-of-the-mill Latin dancing. The Salsa Center only opened a couple of months ago and is quickly gaining speed. This is definitely a place to check out.

Note: There is NO "Third Friday" contra dance in Berea in June or August.

BLUEGRASS DANCE CALENDAR: June 6 - 12, 2011

Swingin' on Main Contest DancersBLUEGRASS DANCE CALENDAR
Ballroom, Swing, Latin and Other Social Dancing In and Around Lexington, Ky
June 6 - 12, 2011

Ballroom dancing, swing dancing, latin dancing and any form of social dancing is a great way to get some exercise, meet new people, and have some good clean fun. I have been participating in ballroom and swing dancing for the last 15 years, so naturally, I like to keep in touch with what kind of dance events are happening in my community. There are several places in the Bluegrass Region to attend dancing events. The Bluegrass Region of Kentucky is defined generally as Lexington, Ky area (Fayette County) and the immediately surrounding counties.

This Week's Dance News: If you didn't get a chance to stop by Swingin' on Main, you missed a really great show! The band was fabulous, and the weather ended up being great - it cooled down quite a bit after sunset and a cool breeze was blowing through downtown to help out the dancers. Mike and Mary did a fantastic job, as usual, of putting together a great event. The dance contest brought out some talented couples - A First, Second and Third Place were crowned, along with an Honorable Mention for Youngest & Cutest entry:

Youngest & Cutest Dance Contest Entry

The second weekends of the month tend to be busy here in Lexington. We have three monthly dances happening this weekend: The ballroom dance party on Saturday presented by USA Dance Bluegrass Chapter, the swing dance on Saturday presented by Swing Dance America, and the "2nd Sunday" Milonga Presented by LexTango.

In addition to all that, there is a special Contra Dance weekend happening called the Dance Trance. This is a full two and a half days (Friday thru Sunday) of workshops and dance parties presented by the Lexington Traditional Dance Association. There's way more than just Contra Dance happening at this event, though. There are workshops on Waltz, English Country Dancing, and a workshop for Contra Calling. There are even workshops on Yoga, Scandi and Nia. Reena Cobo from the Salsa Center will be there to teach a Latin Dance workshop too.

Great dance parties are scheduled for all three nights. Be advised that this is a that this is a registration only event with limited spaces. Walk-up registration may not be available, so get your spot ASAP! You may register for the entire weekend or for workshops or dances a la carte. Visit http://ravitz.us/dancetrance/ for all the details.

A final note: If you didn't happen to watch America's Got Talent last night, you must check out this group of dancers from Miami that did a Latin Dance ensemble routine for their audition. I swear I don't think I've ever seen anybody Mambo that fast in my life, let alone 24 people all at once! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1vP2hQqOmA

The basic moves taught are usually the same, with some variations on using tempo, and less emphasis put on precise posture and embellishments.

A specific dance routine is picked for each song, and then danced with a partner, usally within groups of four or six.

BLUEGRASS DANCE CALENDAR: May 30 - June 5, 2011

Salsa Jam, Alhambra, Ca 1996BLUEGRASS DANCE CALENDAR
Ballroom, Swing, Latin and Other Social Dancing In and Around Lexington, Ky

I have been participating in ballroom and swing dancing for the last 15 years, so naturally, I like to keep in touch with what kind of dance events are happening in my community. There are several places in the Bluegrass Region to attend dancing events. The Bluegrass Region of Kentucky is defined generally as Lexington, Ky area (Fayette County) and the immediately surrounding counties.

This Week's Dance News: Hey, guess what I found? The Salsa Center offers a free monthly Latin Dance! What a great way to check out the styles of Latin dancing if you've never tried it. This dance is the first Friday of each month, which is coming up this week!

But the really BIG news this week is the Swingin' on Main Swing Dance event. This is an annual street dance in Downtown Lexington presented by the Hepcats Swing Dance Club and the LFUCG Parks & Rec's Department (I have to give kudos to the Lexington government for allowing a bunch of freakish swing dancers to take over a section of the city!). It's free, and open to the public, so there's no reason not to come down and at least check out the great music. Bring the kids for this one, since it's a family friendly event. Take it easy, though, as the weather is predicted to remain quite HOT through the rest of the week! Afterward, as if dancing on the streets wasn't enough, the party moves indoors for further hoppin' and boppin' at the usual swing dance studio, until the wee hours of the morning. If you aren't completely saturated with swing dancing by that time, there is yet another swing dance on Sunday night at Arts Place, presented by the Bop Club. Is that enough jumping around for the week?
