Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Fashion Island in Newport Beach 2009

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Fashion Island in Newport Beach

The Newport Beach 2009 Annual Christmas Tree Lighting is going to be this weekend on November 20 – 21, 2009 at Fashion Island. This very popular holiday tradition to view the Fashion Island Tree Lighting is a wonderful opportunity to start off the holiday season. Here is a picture of last year’s Christmas Tree at Fashion Island as it was being set up. For a picture of last year's tree being set up, view the link at NewportBeachRealEstateCafe.com. The tree this year is not as tall due to the new location on the Atrium Lawn at Fashion Island in Newport Beach by Santa's House.

The event will begin at 6pm tonight, or feel free to come and view the lighting ceremony tomorrow.

But I Am a Real Bird

But I Am a Real Bird

Newport Shores is located in Newport Beach and is home to many creatures including racoons, skunks (bummer for my dog Patrick), possums, herons, seagulls, ducks, wood ducks to name a few. Pelicans visit the Newport Shores area in the winter and it is always a treat to see them. It is always a pleasant surprise when the swan comes to visit. She comes about once a year, and she is pretty tame, and will swim to you and enjoys eating bread. There was previously two swans, now there is only one but I always enjoy seeing her again.

Yesterday morning, this beautiful swan was outside our deck, and my daughter was standing there with her bird which is a brown headed parrot sitting on her shoulder - affectionally named B Bird (ok – I know we are not that creative – but it works for him). B Bird is a is a hand fed baby, and is very tame, and is just about a year old ( and is lacking in any outside survival skills), and does have his wings clipped.

Suddenly, B Bird wanted to be a real bird and take flight – right off my daughter’s shoulder and half way across the canal in Newport Shores. Well, B Bird didn’t sink (thank goodness), but he doesn’t have webbed feet to help him swim. So my Daughter Heather (the lifeguard) used to her life-guarding skills to rescue him yesterday. Off the edge of the deck into 60 degree water, she swam to get B Bird in her clothes (she ripped her favorite tee shirt at the same time).

B Bird was soaking wet, and shivering, and had never been that wet before. We dried him and made sure he was warm. B Bird had a precautionary visit to the vet to make sure he was going to be alright from his swim. $140 later, B Bird is on precautionary antibiotics, but is just fine. No harm, no foul (no pun intended!). B Bird just wanted to be a real bird like the other birds in the Canal!
Oh, and when Heather jumped in the Canal, the swan booked it out of there. However, I am glad to see her around again today.

So – another day in Newport Shores.

In Honor of all Veterans on Veteran's Day 2009

In Honor of all Veterans on Veteran's Day 2009

I would like to take this opportunity to honor all the Veterans, both past and present who have served on behalf of our country. The Veterans have made many sacrifices and endured many hardships on behalf of our country, and these sacrifices have ensured our freedom. I want to express my gratitude to them.

My thoughts and prayers are with those at Fort Hood, Texas who recently lost their lives as a result of this senseless shooting. And my heart is with their friends and families who may have a lost a loved one or sustained an injury during that shooting.

I am very grateful for all who have served on behalf of our country, and today is a day to remember our Veterans and honor them.
