Newport Shores in Newport Beach is a community located right off Coast Highway as you are heading north towards Huntington Beach. The Huntington State Beach Lifeguard Tryouts were this morning at 9am at Huntington Beach. The Tryouts were for existing summer lifeguards getting re-qualified, and for new applicants for the Huntington State Beach Lifeguard program.

The ocean temperature was in the high 50's, and the weather conditions were overcast, light mist and the temperature was in the high 50's and warming up to the low 60's. While this may be warm for you in some parts of the country, this is pretty cold when you are completing a 1000 yard swim, through the surf (the waves were pretty big, and there were shores currents and rip tides). Some of the applicants did not wear wet suits . . .

the Huntington State Beach lifeguards are actually employees of the state of California. They run an excellent lifeguard program.

I watched the re-qualification for the existing Huntington Beach lifeguards because my 17 year old daughter was one of the existing lifeguards who was getting re-qualified. She passed and did great!

There were approximately 125 people re-qualifying this morning. They run into the water and swim out around two buoys totalling 1000 yards. The candidates must finish this swim within 20 minutes.

The lifeguard boat Surf Watch is there to oversee as well as the personal watercraft, and lifeguards on paddle boards.

This is just another way to showcase the coastal areas of Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. This tryout was conducted about two miles north of Newport at Huntington State Beach.

Many of the High Schools in both Newport and Huntington offer competitive aquatic programs including water polo and swimming.

There is so much opportunity for activities in this area for people to enjoy. Tthe beaches are manned by very well trained and experienced lifeguards so that the public can enjoy the beach and ocean conditions.

There are also opportunities for younger children from aged 9-15 to participate in the Junior Lifeguard Programs in Newport Beach and Huntington State Beach. Not only does this keep them conditioned, but they learn beach and ocean safety.

This is another benefit of living in the OC and in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach.
