The weather has turned cold and now’s the time to think about winter energy usage. All of the items listed below are worked overtime this time of year due to lower temperatures, less daylight and holiday entertaining.
PGE recently published some solutions that may help keep energy usage down. Good for the environment and good for you wallet! Here’s a list of common triggers and ways to combat them.
Heating
Set thermostat to 68°, lowering it to 60° at bedtime or when you’re away
Check furnace filters monthly and clean or replace as needed
Hot water
Set your water heater to 120°
Wash laundry in cold water when possible
Install a high-performance showerhead
Lighting

Switch from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs
Replace traditional holiday lights with LED strands
Holiday cooking
Use the microwave when possible
Don’t preheat the over unless precision is critical

Portland truly is one of the greenest cities around, and now local stagers are helping to get the word out.
This week, I attended the first Live Green Live Smart Certified Professional training in Oregon thanks to Mary DeBella and Joanne O’Donnell. Now, after just one day (and some pending homework) I am a certified professional.
It was such a great experience to spend the day with other expert stagers and discuss a topic that is so important to our world and our businesses.
I looking forward to incorporating the ideas I learned into my daily routine and to educating my clients and realtor contacts about making informed decisions.
Continuing education credits are available. The program is great for realtors, home inspectors, home builders, designers, decorators and stagers who want to learn more about the LEED program and green building. To learn more about the Live Green Live Smart program visit www.greenbuildscience.net.

While a number of the homes were closed due to weather, there were a few to us who braved the elements. These two really stood out.

I can’t say enough about this sustainable remodel! It’s cozy, light and bright. You must see the exceptional skylight in the living room. Excellent attention to detail. Good sized bedrooms. Feels very private.

This home has all the charm of an older home, is in great condition and has some amenities you’d never expect. The floor plan is a pleasant surprise with a kids “suite” upstairs and master on the main. Loads of character!
