Relocating to Knox County Ohio? It's all about reLocation, reLocation, reLocation!
In 1965 Look Magazine named Mount Vernon an " All American City" and the city maintains the standards that resulted in this acclaim. In 1994 Mount Vernon was named "Ohio's Most Livable Community" by Ohio Magazine.
Mount Vernon, the County Seat of Knox County was founded in1805 and by 1840 the population grew to 2,363. Today, roughly 20,000 people call it home. 50,000 call Knox County Home.
Mount Vernon is quintessential small town USA. Okay so I am biased. I have lived my entire life in Knox County. I have so much love, respect and admiration for this community! Like a well-oiled machine, she seems to deliver new goods just when we need them. I can remember our first McDonalds. Now we have numerous restaurants. The first department store (JC Penney and it is still here!). Walmart. Lowes. Staples. It's all here. Everything we need! Over the past 30 years, she's grown up in all the right places. Do we have a freeway running nearby? No, thank goodness! Maybe that is what keeps her, shall we say, understated?
As a member of our local Chamber of Commerce, I try very hard to stay on top of issues impacting our community. Knox county offers several school districts, all of which you can easily check out right here! Mount Vernon City Schools, Centerburg Schools, Fredericktown Schools, East Knox Schools (Howard/Apple Valley areas), Danville Schools. Our full-service visitors bureau is also at your service and is eager to help with area information.
Mount Vernon was a stop along the Cleveland, Akron and Columbus Railway (Later Pennsylvania, Penn-Central and Conrail) between Cleveland, Orrville and Columbus, Ohio. It was also a stop along the Sandusky, Mansfield and Newark Railroad (Later Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Chessie System and Ohio Central). It is presently at the end of the line from Newark of the Ohio Central Railroad. St. Rt. 36 and the Kokosing River run through Mount Vernon as well. Tree-lined brick streets, historic homes, numerous parks and greenspaces and old-fashioned street-fairs (First Friday!) make Mount Vernon a timeless classic.
Knox County offer over 700 acres of pristine parks including 6 natural park areas replete with walking trails, wildlife veiwing, waterfalls and gorgeous scenery. Mountainbiking, canoeing and hiking are just a few activities to enjoy, not to mention the 16 mile Kokosing Gap Trail for running, walking, biking and rollerblading.
Three college campuses call Knox County home. Kenyon College, The Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Central Ohio Technical College are all conveniently located right here.

Quality living abounds in The Village of Gambier, Ohio, home of Kenyon College. Gambier is home to nearly 2,000 residents, 300 households, all within 0.9 square miles. A walkable community that strives toward sustainability, The Village of Gambier, Knox County, Ohio has implemented forward-looking programs and amenities such as a community recycling program and a dog park, located near the 14 mile long Kokosing Gap Trail.
Famed Middle Path in the heart of the village offers residents and visitors The Kenyon Bookstore, offering a wide array of books, gifts and college wares. Middle Ground Cafe (amazing coffee and tea!), The Village Inn (nice variety of draft imports and resonably priced gourmet fare and live music on Sat nights). The Gambier Deli, The Gambier Grill and The Weathervane (eclectic women's wear) are some of my favorite places to visit on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Kenyon College, a private liberal arts college, was founded in 1824. Kenyon is the oldest private institution of higher education in Ohio. Residents of The Village of Gambier are welcome to use the state-of-art facilities of the Kenyon Athletic Center. The new facility opened in 2006 and also features an arena, indoor tennis courts, indoor track, a recreational gym, dance/yoga/aerobic rooms, a 120-seat theatre for game film review and video analysis, racquetball and squash courts, as well as conference rooms, offices, and a cafe (serving sushi!).
Wiggin Street Elementary School, located in the heart of the Village, enjoys a symbiotic relationship with the college's student body through volunteerism and program support. The Bolton Theater and the Hill Theater offer the community a wide array of entertainment offered through Kenyon's Dance & Drama Department.
A strong sense of community is found within the village. Indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities and a wide array of cultural amenities make The Village of Gambier one of the most desireable and liveable communities in Ohio. Oh, did I mention the scenic Kokosing River runs along the Kenyon College property? Canoeing, fishing, kayaking abound!

Apple Valley Lake in Central Ohio is often touted as one of Ohio's best kept secrets. I tend to agree and here's why:
Apple Valley is a planned community located about 60 miles north east of our capital city, Columbus Ohio. Covering 3,770 acres, it boasts the most affordable Lake Community in our great state. It is home to a 511 acre private lake and an award winning public Apple Valley Golf Course. There are 6,613 lots in Apple Valley and as of the close of 2009 there were 2,510 homes. Whether you are looking for an affordable, permanent family home or a weekend-getaway, Apple Valley literally has it all.
Fishing Apple Valley Lake is easy. Just find a quiet cove or some shoreline. The lake is 3¼ miles long, and boasts 9¼ miles of shoreline. The average depth of this man-made lake is 30 feet. The lake is stocked with Walleye, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Channel Catfish, and is restocked annually by the Apple Valley Property Owners Association and the Apple Valley Fish & Restocking Club.
Beach bums will love the 3 beautifully maintained sand beaches, Sutton, Davis and King Beaches, replete with plenty of green-space, picnic shelters, full-service restrooms, volleyball courts, boat docks and panoramic lake views.
The full service marina sells new and used boats, trailers, boat lifts, engines, paddle boats, kayaks, canoes and more. The Marina provides many services including docking, outside and inside storage, winterization, de-winterization, boat repair, oil changes, and refueling. Pontoon, fishing boat, and non-powered boat rentals are also available to property owners.
The Apple Valley Community offers an indoor pool, and outdoor pool, a community center available for meetings, events and parties and a club house with a fitness center.
Buying a first or a second home in Apple Valley is amazingly affordable. The property owner's association dues are currently under $200.00 annually. Yes, I said annually! Click here to search available Apple Valley Homes via the Sam Miller Team.
Some lake lovers prefer to simply buy an inexpensive vacant lot, just in order to enjoy the ammenties! Vacant Lots priced under $6,000.00 are a plenty.

2010 will mark my 6th year selling real estate in my hometown of Mount Vernon, Ohio. Six years doesn't seem like a long time and it has sure flown by! I have been blessed with many transactions (over 100!) and have made many, many friends along the way. As a gift to myself, this year I will finally organize all of the newspaper clippings, award photographs, press releases and other miscellaneous carreer milestone paraphanalia into one swanky Scrapbook. The results will be a nice reminder to myself that every year my career path grew, each year being more successful than the last. Also I am hoping it will serve as motivation to keep plunging forward, regardless of market conditions. 2009 has been my best year yet!Once completed, I will share the results with all my AR friends!
