Safety at home means securing your home from home intrusion, theft, fire and other damages from the elements. Taking a savvy approach to home safety by implementing prudent safety precautions will give you and your family peace of mind knowing they are safe within their sanctuary.

Today many houses in new neighborhoods come with security systems, if you don't have one, it is not too late to have one installed. There are a variety of products, with a variety of protection levels. There is coverage for every inch of your home while you are away, coverage for just your doors and windows while you are at home, one touch emergency buttons, a simple touch pad, wireless communication technology. Take the time to check into the various systems, and choose the system which best fits your needs.

When purchasing new garage doors, consider the heavier doors, and doors with small glass windows near the top of the door. If you like the larger garage door windows, have tinted glass, textured or frosted glass in the windows. The smaller windows and or special glasses, make it difficult to see in your garage.

When replacing doors consider a single door verses a double door. A single door is more secure as it is less vulnerable. The new deadbolts on doors are designed to go much further into the doorjamb and are fortified with steel, making it more difficult to break into the door.

Outdoor lighting is also another option for protecting your home. Well placed spotlights with motion sensors will alert you to activities outside of your home. At your local home improvement store or lighting store you can find timers that randomly turn lights off and on in your home to simulate a person's use of lights.

Another element vital to your family's safety is fire prevention. Avoid overloading outlets, if outlets or switches feel warm, shut off the circuit and schedule an appointment with your electrician. Make sure cords are in good condition, use extensions cords on a temporary basis. Lamps and ceiling fixtures should only use the bulb wattage recommended by the manufacturer. Keep space heaters at least three feet from combustible materials. Halogen floor lamps, should not be used near combustible materials. It is recommended if your home is 40 years or older to have the electrical wiring checked. Important documents keep in a safety deposit box away from home or in a fire-retardant safe at home.

There should be smoke alarms on very level of your home. Test the alarms every month, replace the batteries once a year. A good suggestion is to test the batteries each time the time changes. If the smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, replace them. Install at least one carbon monoxide detector near each sleeping area. You can use the same check system as for your fire alarms.

Remember to practice fire escape routes with your family members and make sure that everyone in the house knows how to operate the safety systems.
