Dog Gone Wild

T.J.
Meet my 4-year-old. His name is T.J.
T.J. is a miniature dachshund.

Meet T.J. Newest playmate ... name and age are unknown.

Pew

You all know what happens when your child decides he just has to play with the new kid. Yep, you got it ... S-K-U-N-K-E-D!!!

I swear to you, it wasn't pretty.
It just so happened that I had recently stumbled on a recipe for just this sort of thing and decided to hold on to it. Truth be told I figured I would have to give it to my son to use on my grandson who insists he just has to meet the wildlife... all the wildlife.

I was surprised, but this really worked.

Ingredients:
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt

Preparation:
Dissolve the baking powder in the peroxide. Add the soap, mix thoroughly and pour in a spray bottle.

Apply solution to your pets fur avoiding eyes and mouth. Wait 15 minutes and rinse completely. They claim one application will do the trick, but I bathed him twice. They claim this mixture works on people as well. It must be true since there is no odor on my hands and I of course was the one who had to rescue the silly dog from his playmate.

Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Killer

Carbon Monoxide is a toxic gas which is both colorless and odorless. This means that because you can't see, smell or taste it, CO can kill you without you even knowing it's in your home. You can protect yourself and your family from CO poisoning by installing CO detectors in your home.

I know many of you are probably thinking that with heating season behind us, there is little danger of being exposed to Carbon Monoxide. The truth is that if you have a gas stove, gas water heater, gas dryer or an attached garage you can still be exposed.

Carbon Monoxide detectors are inexpensive and simple to install. I suggest a combination smoke and CO detector in every bedroom as well as in each hallway of your house. Common side effects of Carbon Monoxide poisoning:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Confusion
- Nausea

High concentrations of Carbon Monoxide exposure can be fatal. Protect yourself and your family, install detectors in your home and make sure you test them every 6 months.

Is Your Family Protected?

When I do a home inspection one of the first things that catches my immediate attention is a home without GFCI protected outlets. GFCI Outlet_ JTHIS-Professioanl Home Inspection TeamA GFCI other wise known, as a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter is an outlet designed to protect you against electrical shock in wet locations. Areas such as your bathroom, your kitchen sink, your garage, your crawlspace and even outside your house.

Lets say you're in the bathroom using a blow dryer on your hair. You put the hair dryer down and it some how falls into the sink. The GFCI will automatically turn off the power and protect you from being shocked or in the worse case electrocuted.

Receptacle GFCI outlets can be installed in place of the standard duplex receptacle found in the house. They fit in the standard outlet box and will protect you against ground faults from any electrical appliance plugged into that outlet. In many case the outlet can be installed so that it will also protect other electrical outlets further "down stream" in the branch circuit.

A Little Caulk Will Fix It

I was recently hired to perform a home inspection on a bank owned foreclosure. Upon arriving at the property the first thing that caught my eyes was the concrete block foundation. As you can clearly see from these two pictures there is a large vertical crack over 1 inch wide in the corner block and significant movement on the wall long side the crack.

When I point this out to my client he looked at me and said something to the extent of: Oh, I see that, but I'm very handy. That's nothing that I can't fix that with some caulk and a little paint. What I hired you to tell me is whether or not the house is structurally sound. I wanted to ask if it looked structurally sound to him, but what came out of my mouth was a simple no. I indicated the cracked foundation and the block movement on the report and strongly recommended an engineer be consulted for further evaluation. Later on that day I got a call from his Realtor who was very upset with my report. I was told I blew his deal and I'd never get another recommendation from him again.

Talk about a promise I pray he keeps.

The Woods Have Eyes

When taking a nature walk through the woods today, I kept having this feeling that I was being watched. I would turn and look behind me every so often, but of course no one was there. I'd look up into the trees and again no one there, but still I could not shake this awkward feeling that there was some one other than myself out here. Frankly it was starting to freak me out just a tiny bit when suddenly I noticed them. A whole family of them as it turned out.

They were all perfectly harmless and extremely friendly. As it was, it was such a wonderfully sunny day and they too were just hanging around enjoying the warmth after such a long cod winter. Grandpa even offered my some shade and needed rest from the hot sun. For all of you out there who think that what you do in the woods goes on seen ... think again. The Woods Have Eyes and you never know when you too may be being watched.
