Pottery Anyone? I'm not a big pottery guy, but I found these broken pottery pieces in our backyard in Smithfield, Virginia. They were found down the bank of our lot in the edge of a wooded area in a hole we had dug randomly. (A photo of where they were found is below)
Smithfield was established in 1750 and incorporated as a Colonial seaport town. Our county, Isle of Wight was settled by English settlers in the early 1600's. Our neighborhood, Gatling Pointe, is located where the Pagan and James Rivers meet. Indians inhabited our property during the period of time when the Jamestown settlers traded with the Indians on the southern shore of the James River, and what is now Isle of Wight County.

The pottery triangular piece is totally different and has a polished finish with some kind of Indian caricatures painted on it. The other pieces appear to come from the same bowl.

Our lot is on the marsh and we're on a waterfront cul-de-sac, which borders Moone Creek (named after Captain John Moone). I'd say the hole is at about the 10' above sea level mark and our home built is at the 19' above sea level mark. Our company, East West Partners of Virginia developed the company in 1988, and the property was a farm owned by the Edwin Gatling family.
Records indicate that there was a brick factory on the property, called the "Newport News Brickworks" which made bricks for the early Colonial homes. A sawmill was also on the property over 150 years ago. The land was also once owned by Mallory Todd, a Colonial sea merchant, who built a home in downtown Smithfield in 1753. Find out more about the history of the Gatling Pointe property.

Our home was built in 1996 and it's located on the marsh, near Moone Creek that surrounds the western past of Gatling Pointe.
The aerial photo above is of the Gatling Pointe Yacht Club marina and clubhouse. It is located at the mouth of the Pagan River and is bordered by Moone Creek.

Mid-Atlantic Home & Garden Show brings home inspiration just in time for spring
The New Home Expo and Mid-Atlantic Home & Garden Show by the Tidewater Builders Association opened yesterday at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Thousands of people will get a great look at innovative ideas for their homes and their backyards when they walk through the exhibit hall.
Seminars will be going on all weekend, and builders, contractors, and various designers are on hand to help you with any home improvement project or new home plans that you may have. I saw alot of cool backyard kitchens and fire pits yesterday that would look great at my home.
Nora Firestone, pictured above, gave an interesting and creative DIY Kitchen presentation at the Sherwin-Williams booth. (She'll be there again today at 6pm Sat., and 2pm Sun.) I also got a free 5-gallon bucket from Sherwin-Williams, which I can fill with merchandise in-store Mar. 13-15 and receive 35% off whatever fits!

The stone paver backyard kitchen displays were very cool. Great food was also served along with creative ideas for the kichen. You can also find information about new homes and planned communities in the Hampton Roads area like the East West Communities booth- The Riverfront at Harbour View, Founders Pointe, Graystone at Eagle Harbor, and Liberty Ridge in Williamsburg, Viriginia.

What are Testimonials? Do you feature them on your website and in your Sales Model?
Testimonials are persuasive opinions from others that can help you sell your product or a portion of it. East West Communities, which currently has four new home communities in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, relies on it's community sales representatives and Activities Directors to help provide testimonials from residents and property owners.
How should they be used?
Why are they effective? Because they are real and from an unbiased, objective point of view. Consumers are more likely to relate and believe it when they hear it from people in a similar situation.
When should they not be used? When they're not true! Seriously, there may be some buyer personality types that prefer to hear just the facts without any emotional appeal.
Where do you get Testimonials? From your residents, past buyers, and from customers who share the reasons why they love your product/community.

Know your community's main selling points. Conversationally, you can point out what's special about your community and your Featured Models. Real life examples told in a short story format can also be more memorable to a prospective customer.
Display your Testimonials in the Sales Model or Information Center using scrapbooks, newsletters, or on bulletin board displays. Of course, adding them to your website and blogs is another way to promote your features and benefits of your new homes and neighborhood.
Your ‘tag line’ says it all – “Live close to what matters most.” This can mean something different to everyone but to us Founder’s is desirable because of the serenity it provides. When we drive into this planned community we feel like we have arrived at a resort destination. The trees, breezes off the James and overall tranquility contribute to this vacation-like feeling. Overall, this will be the friendly, family-oriented development that we have been looking for. ~ Jeannie Landis
