Lake Weather?

Summer is here! This is perfect weather to be out at the lake.

Boating

In the Bryan/College Station area, we are fortunate to be within an easy driving distance of Lake Lake SommervilleSommerville.

From College Station, it takes maybe 45 minutes to get to Rocky Creek or Birch Creek. Growing up, our family spent many summers there - boating and camping. Since my dad was into water skiing, we didn't do that much fishing unless my grandparents were around.

According to a brochure that I found, Lake Sommerville is a multi-use 11,400 acre lake. There are places for fishing, boating, swimming, camping, hiking, picnicking, trail riding and sightseeing. There are both electrical and non-electrical campsites, including equestrian sites.

If you live in the area and haven't been, I encourage you to visit Lake Sommerville. From College Station, go west on Highway 60. When you get to Highway 36, turn to the left and then take a left back on Highway 60 again - to get to Birch Creek. OR, at Highway 36, turn right and go into Sommerville - the town. There will be signs to guide you to Rocky Creek and Welch Park. It is easy to find. Have fun!

Instant gratification?

My challenge as a gardener is that I want instant gratification.

I want it now. I don't want to wait. For my plants, preparing the soil is done in the few moments prior to the plant being stuck in the ground. (I live in College Station, TX. Our temperatures hit 87 last week, so we do have some gardening challenges, but at least they do not include dealing with snow.) This year, to my surprise my "garden" is actually looking nice. Right now, at least. Maybe, just maybe, as I am getting older I'm doing a better job of picking out plants that can stand my type of abuse.

This year, I bought two tomato plants. The one that I bought at a plant fair held at Texas A&M has far tomatoes, petuniassurpassed my Walmart plant.

Last year, I dug up some petunias that were growing on a friend's ranch at an old home-site. This year, those petunias are stealing the "show."

Currently, my biggest delights may be a package of "marked down" impatiens that I bought at Lowe's early last month. I had never planted them before. I put them in a shady spot that doesn't drain very well and gets wet every time I turn on the water hose. I figured since I had only a dollar invested in them, it wouldn't hurt if they died. Well, they seem to be growing and flourishing. Was that lucky or what?

Nothing to Do????

I don't understand why people complain they have nothing to do. I seem to have the opposite problem. It seems to me that finding something to do, is simply just a matter of looking around and getting moving. (Granted, that can be hard at times.) There are so many things to do, I can't do them all.

For instance, I didn't have time to ride my horse this weekend. My friend Katie, did make time to jump on hers and ride around a little bit. Katie on her horseShe had fun.

This weekend for instance, there were three concert options in the Brazos Valley area.

The Hawgs of Texas rally was in Sommerville. Their three day main stage line-up included David Allen Coe, Tracy Connover, King's Highway, Vince Neil, Dimitris Rail, Tommy T & the Roadhouse, Jackyl, Great White, Lights Out and Southern Glory. Attendance for this event is expected to top 10,000.

On Saturday, at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater in College Station, was the Duck Jam - a Ducks Unlimited Fundraiser. The line up included Roger Creager, REckless Kelly, Brandon Rhyder, Micky and the Motor Cars, Rich O'Toole, and Jeff Hobbs and the Jacks.

In Downtown Bryan, was the KEOS 89.1 Spring Fundraiser Concert. Their line up included Tom Tranchilla, Beth Isbell, Sweet Mama Cotton, Willie B, Selia Qynn, Kenyon White, Saylor White, and the Neeley Lewis Band.

Tonight (Sunday), the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra is holding a free concert under the stars at the Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater in College Station.

And, all of these activities are just related to music! Even if I didn't go, I probably could spend over an hour just trying to figure out what type of music some of these people played. There were other activities, such as a trail ride benefiting St. Jude at Tonkaway Ranch, numerous sporting events, etc. going on. Why do people think there is nothing to do? Is that just something people like to say?
