Snickersville, the original name of the Village of Bluemont lies on the western edge of Loudoun County at the base of Snickers Gap between Loudoun and Clarke County. Snickers Gap is actually a wind gap which is a valley where a stream or river once ran through. Snickersville, Snickers Gap and Snickersville Turnpike were all named after the Shenandoah Ferry Operator, Edwards Snickers. These historical names were well known in the late 1700's through the Civil War Era.
In the late 19thcentury, the W&OD railway was extended to Snickersville and the town soon became a resort community for the Washington DC residents. In order to promote the town which is at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the name was changed to Bluemont. There was a period of time where Bluemont was considered the summer getaway to spend vacations.
Bluemont is one of the few communities in Loudoun that still holds the charm of the 19thcentury. It has a small town feel and is very community oriented. The Friends of Bluemont was organized in 2002 so that the charm and beauty of the original Snickersville was preserved.
Bluemont has many wonderful attractions to attend such as:
In addition, Bluemont is also home to many equestrian properties and small farms. It is a great community for the rider with miles of trails and local boarding farms. Click here to search for equestrian properties in Bluemont.
One of the most common questions realtors face when they are working with buyers is about safety concerns regarding the neighborhoods being looked at. Where is that information found? There are several sources such as the local papers, homeowners associations, etc...but probably the best source is from the Loudoun County website.
Loudoun County has recently teamed up with CrimeReports.com (www.CrimeReports.com) which is an online mapping service utilizing Google Maps and calls-for-service data from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Computer Aid Dispatch service (CAD). CAD is an application used for the coordination, assignment and communication with the Sherrif's who are out on patrol answering calls for service.
The calls for service data is what CrimeReports.com uses to post information on crime reports such as date, event number, event location (street, city, etc) and what the event type was. Information regarding descriptions of the data fields can be found here: http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=2290.
If you are researching a potential neighborhood, keep in mind that the website is updated every morning at 1:00 am...the most recent 30 days data is available for your review.
This website has mainly high level information, however, if you need up to the minute information, you can access the Alert Loudoun system. More detailed crime report information may be found at the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Daily Crime Report site.

I am not sure where to post this, however, I'm sure there are many folks on Active Rain who may have dealt with Jim Cover as he was one of the top producing loan officers in the country....
It is with great sadness that I bring to you the news that Jim Cover passed away this week on October 28, 2008. Below is an excerpt from his obituary in the Washington Post and a link for information on his services. I had the pleasure to work with Jim for 8 years at Waterfield Financial and just recently learned of his illness. Jim was great to work with and he took pride in helping his realtors with their clients. He will be sadly missed by many.
