At a meeting Thursday night, officials of the department asked for local help in making the changes safe and attractive.
More than 110 residents, who use U.S. 70 as their Main Street, filled the Havelock Tourist and Events Center looking for answers to questions about the state's Super 70 plan. There was a map showing a planned U.S. 70 Bypass of Havelock and property owners will be notified when land acquisition for the bypass begins in 2010. The Transportation Department hopes to start building the bypass in 2015 and have it ready for traffic by 2019. The U.S. 70 Corridor Commission will also make a presentation and hear public comment at Brinson Memorial Elementary School Cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 31.
Presenters said 45 percent of the accidents in North Carolina happen on 7 percent of the highways and U.S. 70 is one of the high-accident roads.
The Craven County and Havelock area has the second-highest number of accidents of any U.S. 70 section, nearly 1,800 in the period studied between 2001 and 2004. The presenters said an increase in trucks to the Morehead City Port could increase that annual total.
