Unlike your typical elementary school at Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School, students come and students go. Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School, serves mostly military families in Cherry Point housing and it has always done a great job helping students transition in and out of school.
The Havelock school, which opened in 1961, was named a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School for 2008.
The school was just one of six in the state to receive the national honor, said Principal Kathy Leffler.
The award comes from the U.S. secretary of education and honors schools that are either academically superior or that show dramatic gains in student achievement to high levels.
Schools are nominated for the award on the basis of test scores being in the top 10 percent of the state. Leffler said receiving it requires an in-depth analysis of five years of testing data that includes student subsets such as race, sex and disabilities.
After submitting the information, the school then had to wait on 2007-08 Adequate Yearly Progress reports from the N.C. Department of Instruction before learning it had won the award.
The school was one of just 320 elementary, middle, high and private schools in the country to receive the Blue Ribbon designation.
Congratulation to the hard working students and faculty members at Arthur W. Edwards Elementary School. Keep up the great job!

New Bern is covering up for the cold front!
Weather forecasters expect temperatures to reach the low to mid teens in New Bern on Saturday morning, the coldest air the area has felt in about five years. Officials are advising people to stay indoors and take their plants and pets with them. Cold air has already caused several accidents around the county as we were seeing some ice on the roads. Officials are warning drivers to watch out for slick bridges and overpasses the next several days. A cold front will begin to move through the area today, bringing the coldest arctic air New Bern will feel this winter and high temperatures are expected to stay in low 30s for the next 3-4 days. Some local golf courses are closing as they are covering greens in order to prevent possible serious damage to the facilities.
With sinking temperatures local Charity organizations are gearing up to offer as much assistance as well as to educate public about safety and hypothermia. People must understand how to safely heat their homes when temperatures drop into the teens as that is something this area is not used to. If you have extra winter clothing or blankets please remember Religious Community Services located on 919 George St (252) 633-2767 as they have people lined up and they are always doing such a phenomenal job helping New Bern area's less fortunate.
Be vary careful with your fuel and heating systems and drive safe!

After falling for more than three months, gasoline prices in the New Bern area are quickly rising again this week.
Prices at some stations increased at least 15 cents in about 24 hours Wednesday. Fuel Warehouse on Glenburnie Road was selling a gallon of unleaded for $1.52 on Tuesday afternoon. The price was $1.58 on Wednesday morning and $1.68 by the afternoon. The national average was also $1.68, seven cents higher than the same time last week.
Those prices fell to about $1.50 in the New Bern area in recent months, as crude oil prices plummeted from $140 to $33 a barrel, a five-year low according to the federal Energy Information Administration.
The good news is that prices should stay low this year!
