Memorial Day/Veterans day/Remembrance Day- How Patriotic are we Americans?
On a recent trip up to vancouver B.C. this past weekend, I had noticed alot of people wearing these pins on their lapels and finally had to ask what it signified. I did see alot of Maple leafs on just about everything Canadian, even between the Golden Arches of the McDonalds logo, so having everyone don a bright red flower on their coats and jackets made me wonder what all the fuss was about.
I do understand the Canadians are quite proud of their country and what it stands for and rarely have I met a Canuck who was not more than friendly to me. Even bumping into people in a crowded mall or nightclub, They would look over and apologize for making contact with me.
On my way up to Canada, i visited a friend who works as a U.S. Customs Border Patrol Officer. His stance was, If you are coming into our country, The United States of America, Why are you coming here? Are you going to contribute something? or are you here to free load on our resources and benefit from our country? He said if that is your intention, or you don't like the way things are done in the United States, Then they can get out.
This brings me to think how we can be a little more like our brothers and sisters up there. Our Veterans day is a day away, just under 24 hours from today, What are we doing to commemorate this event? I know the Veterans do memorial services and gather amongst each other for support, but what do we as citizens do for thanking the veterans who protected our country?
As JFK once quoted," Not ask what your country can do for you , but what you can do for your country" started to resignate with me.
What are your thoughts? How can we contribute and keep this the best place to live?
